JESUS CALLS PETER AND ANDREW.

SERIES: JESUS BEGINS EARTHLY MINISTRY

TEXT: MATTHEW 4:18-20, LUKE 5:1-11

The Lord lived on the earth physically for about 33 years. After the story of His birth we do not hear of Him again until He was 12 years old when Joseph and Mary forgot to ensure He was travelling back to Nazareth with them and later found Him in the temple. At the age of 30 years, He started His earthly ministry and was baptized by John the Baptist after which He went for 40 days fast in the wilderness. In the early days of ministry He appointed these 12 disciples:-

  1. Simon Peter son of Jonah from Galilee.
  2. Andrew son of Jonah from Galilee.
  3. John son of Zebedee from Galilee.
  4. James son of Zebedee from Galilee
  5. Bartholomew from Galilee.
  6. Phillip from Galilee.
  7. Thomas from Galilee.
  8. Matthew from Galilee.
  9. James son of Alpheus from Galilee.
  10. Simon the Zealot.
  11. Judas Thaddeus from Galilee.
  12. Judas Iscariot from Judah.

All of the disciples of the Lord were from Galilee, the northern province of Israel. Only Judas Iscariot was from Judea the southern province. The calling of Peter and Andrew:-

PETER AND ANDREW WERE HARDWORKING FISHERMEN.

Peter and Andrew, sons of Jonah were brothers.

  • They used to do fishing in the lake/sea of Galilee. When Jesus found them they had done fishing all the night. They were hardworking people.
  • God has always worked with hardworking people. There is no place of laziness in the word of God. When God called prophet Elisha, he was in the farm working with his flock. Moses met God when he was keeping the flock. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, were all hardworking people.
  • Industry is a big key to opening the blessings of God.
  • Peter and Andrew had toiled all the night and caught nothing-Luke 5:5.
  • At the command of Jesus they obeyed. At times God may instruct you to do something that does not seem to make sense; its important to obey. We must obey God even if what He says doesn’t seem to make sense.
  • They caught many fish.

JESUS CHRIST PAYS FOR SERVICES.

  • The Lord had used the boat of Peter for ministry-Luke 5:3. He used Peter’s boat to preach from the water.
  • After using someone’s boat, the Lord paid back. He directed Peter to where the fish were.
  • Have you toiled and caught nothing? Jesus knows where you can get fish, but into his service.
  • Where Jesus arrives, fish are available.

PETER AND ANDREW LEFT FISHING

At the call of Jesus they left their profession.

They saw greater gain and greater reward to serve in the kingdom of God other than to make financial gain on earth.

CONCLUSION

  • When Jesus, arrives fish arrive. The Lord comes into your life to cause expansion.
  • Is God calling you? Obey, there’s gain to follow the Lord.
