SINGING PSALMS, HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS.

SERIES: THROUGH THE BOOK OF COLOSSIANS.

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 3:16

Christianity is a singing religion. In heaven our eternal home where God dwells, music is the order of the day. A christian who cannot sing melody is one lacking great tool of the weapons of the christian warfare.

The Bible tells us that when we enter heaven we shall sing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb-Rev. 15:3.

Our Lord Jesus used to sing. After presenting the first ever Holy Communion, Jesus with the disciples sang a song-Matthew 26:30.

In the christian worship, singing plays a key role. Psalms also are part of the worship a believer should present to God. King David, a man after God’s heart was a great psalmist.

Other great people who sang; Miriam the sister of Moses, Deborah the lady judge of Israel and prophet Elijah-2nd Kings 3:15. Here we are instructed to sing, for praise and worship to the Lord:-

God is the only person who is worthy of worship and God rightly deserves worship. More about singing praises and worship to the Lord:-

HIS POSITION.

  • God is our Creator. He is the one that formed each one of us-Ezekiel 18:4.
  • God is seeking for men to worship Him-John 4:23-24.
  • Worship is the language of heaven-Isaiah 6:1-4.
  • God dwells in the praises of His people-Psalm 22:3.
  • God Jehovah is the only one worthy of our worship. The enemy coveted worship in heaven and was cast down to the earth-Isaiah 14:12. Today He is still deceiving people to worship him.
  • If God is looking for men/women to worship Him we please Him by availing ourselves to provide what He looks for.

HIS POWER.

  • Psalm 145:2, says, “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise. His greatness no one can fathom. When we contemplate the immensity of our God we find ourselves surrounded by unknowable wonders.
  • Psalms 145:4, “One generation commends your works to another.” We should speak the greatness of God to others if He is great to us. Whatever is great in your life, you always voice it out.
  • HIS PERSONALITY-Psalm 145:7-9.
  • We should voice out the goodness of God. Singing to the Lord is appreciating His abundant goodness.
  • The Lord is gracious and compassionate to us-Psalm 145:8.
  • We should celebrate and sing joyfully to Him because of who He is.

HIS PROVISION-Psalm 145:14-16.

  • The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down- 14.
  • The Lord gives us food at the proper time- 15.
  • The Lord opens the hands and satisfys the desires of every living thing. The Lord is extremely powerful and awesome but also tender to look into the needs of His people. A great example is when He provided food to Elijah through ravens. God is still doing this even today.

HIS PRESENCE-Psalm 22:3.

  • God dwells in the praises of His people. We express these praises through psalms and songs.
  • A believer who seeks the presence of the Lord will get it spontaneously through singing to the Lord.
  • When the presence of the Lord comes, powers of satan cannot stand in the presence of God. They have to flee!!
  • Singing praises and worship to God is a weapon of war. It will chase away satan.
  • The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth-Psalm, 145:18-19.
  • The fellowship with God through singing, one must be totally lost in the praise and worship. How many times we sing half-heartedly to the Lord!! How often we sing absent minded to the Lord!!
  • The word of God instructs us to sing to the Lord a new song. This is a song one has never heard of. Going to this extend shows real commitment to please Him.
  • Joyful noise: Psalm 98:4-9, The word of God tells us to make noise that is joyful. This is part of worship.

CONCLUSION

  • Our God loves music. Let us sing of praise and songs of worship to Him.
