TEXT: I JOHN 1:5-8
INTRODUCTION
This message examines the meaning of the concept of “God is Light”. Although God is light, light is not God !!. We are going to look at one of the simplest passages in the Bible. The Apostle heard Jesus Christ preaching. They heard Him saying “God is Light and in Him there is no darkness at all”
“God is Light!” we need light just like we need God. There is a physical disorder caused by lack of light and it is called “Seasonal Affective Disorder “ (S.A.D). It is caused by lack of exposure to sunlight. It alters a person’s brain chemistry. When human eyes don’t come into contact with “daylight” the brain chemical called serotonin is not is not released to the brain. When serotonin is not produced in sufficient quantities, symptoms of depression may occur. Instead melatonin another brain chemical which regulates our sleep cycle is released in great quantities, adding to the depressive state. Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) is treated by exposure to sunlight.
We need physical sunlight, but even more we need God. Without God we suffer “SADNESS”
Let us learn:-
- LIGHT GIVES LIFE. (V.5)
- One of the first things God placed in this world was light (Gen.1:3)
- One of the major teachings of John is that “Life comes from God and eternal life comes through Jesus Christ.
- Apart from Him there is no life. Eggs are hatched by light.
- LIGHT INSPIRES (V.5-6)
- People who had a near to death experience come back to describe a warm light that attracted them.
- Light draws and inspires people who want to be near it.
- People who walk in God’s light want to have fellowship with Him.
- In Exodus 13, God led the children of Israel out of Egypt.
- Psalm 119:105- “your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path”.
- Light is guide. God desires to lead you and me through difficulties, in decisions and in facing the challenges of life.
III. LIGHT IS A SYMBOL OF HOPE (Psalm 27:1)
- “The lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear, the Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid of?”
- Isaiah prophecies (Isa.9:2)
- In most homes in the civilized world, there is a “nightlight” in every room.
- LIGHT REPRESENTS TRUTH (Acts 9:3)
- Apostle Paul was converted to faith in Christ through a bright light.
- Lighthouses and Airport are lighted to show the sailors and pilots the truth about the location of runways and pathways.
- The truth will set you free (John 8:32).
CONCLUSION.
¨ Five functions of light; it gives life, inspires, guides, hope and reveals truth.
¨ God meets those needs in our lives.
¨ God wants to meets one of those needs in your life today.
¨ Let God meet your need today.
