GENESIS 19: 15 – 26.

INTRODUCTION

Jesus Christ tells us in Luke 17: 32, that we should all remember Lot’s wife. Her name is not disclosed to us in the Bible. In the context of His coming, Jesus will come;

1) Suddenly – v 24. (2) He will come surprisingly v 27. (3) He will come speedily v. 29. (4) He will come searchingly v 32. “Remember Lot’s wife”. (5) He will come solemnly v. 34-36.

Let us learn;

I.  REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE (v. 32) SHE PERISHED DESPITE;

  1. Her connections.
  • Lot’s wife was Abraham’s niece, yet she perished.
  1. Her call (Gen 19: 17.)
  • She was made aware of the danger. She was in -“be consumed.”
  • She was given the direction she must take “Escape to the mountain” (Calvary).
  • The diligence she must show. “Escape for thy life.”
  • Despite knowing the will of God, the word of God and the way of God. She still perished.
  1. Her company (Gen 19:15)
  • God was willing to save her yet she perished.
  • Abraham was praying for her yet she perished.
  • She was in the hands of the angles yet she perished.
  • She was hastened by the Holy Spirit yet she perished.
  1. Her choice (Gen 19:16)
  • She and her husband lingered. The angles hastened her.
  • She had the mercy of God – but she perished.
  • She was brought out of the city – but she perished.
  1. Her Commitment (Gen 19:23)
  • She was almost saved – but she perished.
  1. A scribe (Mark 12:34) He was so near, yet so far from the kingdom of God.
  2. Felix – (Acts 24:24-25) Felix trembled – “go thy way for this time: when I have a covenant season, I will call for thee”
  • We are not saved at our convenience, but God’s time.
  1. Agrippa (Acts 26:27-29) – He almost got saved.
  • “The Agrippa said unto Paul, almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.”
  • Lot’s wife had come so far yet perished.
  1. Caution (Gen 19:26) “but his wife looked back from behind him and she became a pillar of salt.”
  2. It was a look of disbelief (Gen 3:4)
  3. It was a look of disobedience (Gen 19:17)
  4. It was a look of disclosure, it revealed the subtleness of sin, the seriousness of sin and significance of sin.
  5. It was a look of disaster – “she became a pillar of salt.”
  • It was sudden, serious, shameful – she perished.
  • She was so near to the kingdom of heaven yet so far. She actually perished.

II.  THE SAVE NEED TO BE HASTENED. (GEN 19:15)

  1. In matters of obedience to their Lord. Few of us can say “I made haste and delayed not to keep thy commandments”
  • In coming out of the world “ He lingered” “His wife looked back”
  • Come out from among them and be separate.
  • In seeking the good of their families “Hast thou here any besides?” (V. 12)
  • In general, we are not quick in “escaping for our lives” (V. 17)
  1. Why? The flesh is weak, Lot was an old man and fat in worldliness.
  • Perseverance is difficult “I can escape to the mountain.”
  1. By what means? By reminding them of their obligation, their opportunities, and the days already wasted.
  • Remind the saved of the brevity of life and the flight of time.
  • Remind them and warn them of the sure ruin of their impenitent friends, delay in duty is sin and leads to other sins.

III.  THE SINNERS NEED TO BE HASTENED

  1. Sinners are very slow and apt to linger.
  • They have settled down in the Sodom of sin, they are tied and bound by many ties to the city of destruction.
  • Delay is Satan’s grand device for their ruin.
  • Procrastination baffles our persuasions to them
  1. Our business is to hasten them
  • We must be in earnest as the angels did not leave Lot
  • We must lay our hands upon them resolutely.

CONCLUSION

  • Remember Lot’s wife.
