TEXT: MATTHEW 21:9-10.
Hosanna comes from the Hebrew word “Yoshana” which means, “Save Now.” The people of Jerusalem did not fully understand what they were really saying, as Christ’s entry upon the lowly donkey, began his journey to just do that-SAVE NOW!
Hosanna in the highest, Jesus Christ is salvation in the highest. We are here to experience Him, to worship Him, to celebrate Him and to honor Him. On this very day 2,000 years ago our Savior entered into Jerusalem triumphantly. He knew that He was going to the cross, the grave, the resurrection in seven days. Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest!!
When Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem all the city was stirred, saying “Who is this?” the crowds did not understand or grasp who was entering town riding on the donkey, so it is today.
What will you tell Jesus today?
Let us look at two phrases we could possibly tell Jesus as He comes our way today:-
HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID.
- A throng of people cried out “Hosanna” to Jesus.
- They were quoting Psalm 118:25-26, “O Lord, do save, we beseech you; O Lord we beseech you, do send us prosperity! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD. We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.”
- Hosanna meant “Save now”
- Jesus was seen by many to be the promised Messiah in Zachariah 9:9, by their reference to Jesus as the son of David. “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold your king is coming to you. He is just and endowed with salvation. Humble and mounted on a donkey, even a colt, the foal of a donkey”-Zach. 9:9.
The Messiah was supposed to accomplish at least these four things:-
- Redeem God’s people.
- Judge those who oppose God’s people.
- Rule the nations with peace.
- Act on God’s behalf.
- These people were in bondage, oppressed, bullied and disenfranchised.
- They needed a hero to free them from Roman rule.
- Many of the people did not fully understand Jesus Christ’s role as Savior-“Save now.”
- You may not fully understand who Jesus is, but you need a Savior-“Save now.”
- Come to Jesus with shouts of hosanna-“Save now.”
- Lord Jesus “Hosanna” my marriage-“Save now.”
- Lord Jesus “Hosanna” my children-“Save now.”
- Lord Jesus “Hosanna” my home-“Save now.”
- Lord Jesus “Hosanna” my finances-“Save now.”
- Lord Jesus “Hosanna” my relationship-“Save now.”
- Lord Jesus “Hosanna” my addiction-“Save now.”
Before you can cry out “Hosanna” you must acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Messiah.
Jesus Christ is really the only way to save your marriage, home, children, finances addiction your country.
- The Old Testament contains over 300 references to the Messiah that were fulfilled in Jesus.
- Mathematically through the law of probability we get a clue.
- Josh McDowell (evidence that demands a verdict) says, “The chance that any man might have fulfilled only 8 of 300 prophesies is one in ten to the seventeenth power (1017) that would be one in 100,000,000,000,000,000.
- All the prophesies on the Messiah were fulfilled in Jesus the son of David, Savior and Lord.
- Although many saw Jesus a Savior others asked “Who is this?”
WHO IS THIS?
- On that Palm Sunday, there were in Jerusalem between 150,000 and 2 million people who came face to face with Jesus.
- Jesus passed by two groups of people.
- The “Hosanna people.”
- The “Who is this” people.
- Jesus was right in front of their faces. He was offering them what they were asking for, but they just let Jesus pass them by.
- Today some people have a brief encounter, emotional experience but within days they go back to the old way of life-sin life.
- Some people hear about him, see those who love Jesus, but they never get to Jesus personally.
- They let Jesus pass by them.
- Jesus Christ is offering what people are asking for. “Hosanna” and they are either accepting it, rejecting it or allowing to just pass through.
CONCLUSION
- The crowd at the first Palm Sunday did not fully grasp who Jesus Christ is.
- Today people are doing the same, they are crying for what Jesus has come to offer, but they are rejecting the man who is able to answer their question.
- Today cry out to Jesus “SAVE NOW” and truly let the Lord save your life, family, home, your finances.
