HEBREWS 2:5-18

In chapter one of Hebrews, the emphasis is the deity of Christ. The emphasis of chapter two is the humanity of Christ. “The word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” Joshua 1. Although we do not have the photos of Jesus Christ, but in this verse, we have word pictures that describe just who the Man Jesus really is.

Let us learn:

  1. WE SEE JESUS AS OUR SAVIOR (V.10) 5-10
  • Jesus Christ is the author (Pioneer, Captain) of our salvation
  • By the grace of God, Jesus, the complete man is able to restore us to the place of glory and honor that God created us for.
  • For this to happen, we must be “in Christ” through faith in His atoning blood and work.
  1. The purpose of our salvation “for whom and by whom are all things. In bringing many sons to glory.
  • In Jesus Christ, we are bound for glory.
  • This world is not our home, we are just passing through
  • This life is only but the beginning
  1. The price of our salvation
  • Perfect and complete, salvation is made complete through the suffering of Christ (V.)
  • The death of Christ on the cross was a substitutionary sacrifice for sin
  • The cross is the central factor in the church
  • The blood of Christ and the cross of Christ are the heart of our faith.
  • If you take away the cross and the blood of Christ away. Then there is no gospel, no salvation and no hope.

II.  WE SEE JESUS CHRIST AS OUR SANCTIFIER (V.11-13)

  • Jesus is the one who sanctifies or makes us Holy
  • Believers are the ones being sanctified or made Holy
  • To sanctify or to make holy means to be set apart
  • Our Lord sets us apart as to the service of God
  • The sanctified ones are:
  1. They that are brothers or sisters of the Son.
  • Jesus is presented as our elder brother.
  • He is not ashamed to call us His brothers
  • The Bible uses several terms to describe, servants, friends, brothers etc.
  • Brothers is a family term, our Lord sets us apart as members of His own family, His brothers and sisters.
  1. They are children of the father
  • You and I are children of God. This is a special relationship, I am a child of the king.

III.  WE SEE JESUS CHRIST AS OUR DELIVERER (14-15)

We, believers, are partakers with Jesus Christ. Our position is “in Christ”

We share in the accomplishment of the cross, through His atoning sacrifice on the cross of Calvary Jesus:-

  1. Accomplished the defeat of the devil
  • “That through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is the devil.
  • To “destroy” in this sense means “to make inoperative” or “ineffective”
  • Through His death and resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ broke the hold Satan had over us.
  • When man yielded to the devil, sin entered into human experience and death by sin.
  • So the devil is real, he is powerful, he is deceptive, he is dangerous – but praise God Satan is defeated.
  1. Our high priest help us when we are tempted
  • Jesus Christ did not only atone for our sins, but He also qualified by personal experience to aid believers in their struggle against temptation.
  • Jesus Christ was tempted like us, but without sin.
  • Jesus is sympathetic with our plight, He understands when we are tempted.
  • Jesus Christ runs to us when we cry for help

CONCLUSION

  • Now that you have seen Jesus in the light of God’s word – would you like to receive Him as your savior and Lord?
  • Let us ever come to Jesus, moment by moment for cleansing, for sanctification, for encouragement and for salvation.
