SERIES: EXODUS- SAVED TO SERVE
TEXT: EXODUS 2:1-10
The topic of mother is a bittersweet emotive episode. For many people there is no one in the world like their mother. For most people mom is a very special person. Others, however, have memories of mother that are not all that special. Perhaps the relationship was strained for some reason. For some motherhood is an accident, and not always a welcome idea, for some mothers were not that nice. To become a mother is not difficult, being a mother is the difficult part. We must be careful as we discuss the topic of motherhood. Real mothers are an integral part of our lives. We would not be who we are today without our mothers. Actually we would not be here today where it not for mothers.
Some of the greatest people in history praised their mothers for their greatness. George Washington for example declared, “All I am I owe to my mother.” The saying, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world,” is still true to date. The greatest man in the Old Testament history, a man called Moses became great because of the type of mother he had. The choices that this two mothers made on the life of Moses, made Moses who is. Moses was the man with two mothers. Let us learn:-
THEY CHOSE TO GIVE MOSES LIFE.
Look at the choice Jochebed made.
- Moses was born into a culture of death-Exodus 1:7-22.
- According to the decree of the Pharaoh, Moses should have been killed at birth.
- Imagine the pregnancy, imagine the waiting, the expectancy.
- Jochebed must have wondered whether she was carrying a boy or a girl.
- There were no ultrasounds to discover the sex of the baby.
- They had to wait until birth. When she did give birth the baby boy was “goodly, good, pleasant, agreeable and happy-A lovely baby boy.”
- Although it was a time of death, Jochebed chose life for her son. She refused to kill him-Hebrews 11:23.
- Amram and Jochebed hid the growing baby for as long as they could-Exodus 2:2-4.
- Her faith in God would not allow her to kill her son.
- The combined effort of faith, Amram, Jochebed and Miriam gave life to Moses.
Look at the choices of the princes-Vs. 5-6.
- The daughter of Pharaoh came down to the river to bathe.
- She saw the floating ark and she send her servants to investigate.
- She saw the crying baby boy, she was compassionate, she had pity on the baby.
- The princess (Hatshepsut) made a choice to give life to Moses.
- She chose not to obey the decree of the king, her own father.
- This pagan princess, born into a culture of death, chose life for a child who should have been killed.
- Today, we live in a culture of death. We live in world where the most dangerous place for an unborn child is the mother’s womb.
- We live in a world where not every pregnant woman wants to be a mother.
- We live in a culture that allows a woman to take away the life of their child.
- On average, women give at least three reasons for choosing abortion.
- The baby would interfere with work, school and other responsibilities.
- They cannot afford a child.
- They don’t want to be a single parent or they are having problems with their husband or partner.
- Those who abort for the above reasons are called pro-choice. Those who choose life for the baby are called pro-life.
- Let us thank God for every mother who chooses life for her child. God is pro-life because human life is precious to the Lord.
- If you have had an abortion, God loves you and He cares about you. Your choice to end the life of your child was a sin, a forgivable sin.
- Bring your sin to God and allow Him to cleanse your heart and remove your pain.
- Death would have been easier, but both Jochebed and Hatsheput chose to give Moses life.
THEY CHOSE TO GIVE MOSES LOVE.
- Both Jochebed and Hatsheput loved him more than their lives.
- Jochebed risked her life to save Moses.
- Hatsheput his adaptive Egyptian mother risked the wrath of her father, the Pharaoh to save his life.
- Jochebed loved Moses because Moses was her son, flesh and blood.
- Hatsheput loved Moses because God gave her love for Moses.
- She named him, “Moses” meaning “draw out” of the nile.
- It was a name of providence and destiny, one day Moses would “draw out” others.
- While Pharaoh was a “destiny killer” Hatsheput was a “destiny helper.”
- Just be reminded, we serve a God who is in charge of all things. He is the one who controls every event in life to accomplish His purpose in the world-Psalm 115:3; 135:6; Eph. 1:11.
- God spared Moses for great purpose to lead Israel out of slavery-Acts 7:29-38.
- If you were born into a family where you received love, you should rejoice.
THEY CHOSE TO GIVE MOSES LEADERSHIP.
- Both mothers who God chose for Moses invested themselves into Moses life.
The Egyptian mother gave him the best that Egypt had to offer-Acts 7:21-22.
- She gave him the best education available.
- He was trained in military science, architecture, agriculture, hydrology, engineering, law, leadership, poetry and all literature.
His birth mother gave something his adaptive mother could not give him.
- Jochebed introduced Moses to the God of Israel.
- She taught him about the true and Living God.
- She warned him of the false gods of Egypt and its false religion.
- She told him the stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.
- She told him the reason why Israel was in Egypt and in bondage in Egypt.
- Her lessons took root in heart, look at Hebrews 11:24-27.
- By the time Moses was grown, he understood that God would use him to deliver the people of Israel from captivity-Acts 7:24-29.
The lessons Moses learned from his mother set the very course of his life.
- We need to give our children the education and knowledge which CBC, High school, college and universities cannot give them. We need to tell them of Jesus Christ.
- If your children leave your home and unable to balance their checkbook, but with a clear understanding of who God is and who Jesus Christ is.
- If they leave your home without much English, maths and science, let them leave home knowing the miracle working Jehovah.
- Let us give them the Bible, Jesus Christ and a firm faith in God.
CONCLUSION
- If you were blessed to have a good godly mother you should thank God for that today.
- If your mother was not what she should have been ask God to overcome her negative influence over your life.
- If your mother is lost in sin you should pray for her salvation.
- If your mother is still alive affirm your love for her.
- If you are not out of God’s will and lost, come to Jesus now for salvation.
