THE MOST EXALTED CHARACTER OF GOD IS HOLINESS

SERIES: HOLINESS- GOD’S WAY TO GREATNESS

TEXT: Ist PETER 1:15-17.

Holiness is the character of God that is most displayed in the Bible. Holiness is also called godliness. The character of godliness is the greatest evidence of a born-again person. Salvation is empowerment by the blood of Jesus to live a sanctified life. The blood of Jesus Christ empowers a believer to have victory over sin.

God requires of the believer to be holy, “but as He which called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation because it is written, be ye holy, for I am holy.”- 1st Peter 1:15-16. God cannot require something from us- that we are not able to do! To do business with God Jehovah, it’s a must to be holy. The grace to be holy was brought by Jesus; grace enables you to overcome sin and live in victory over sin- in holiness.

HOW THE SINFUL NATURE IS DESCRIBED IN THE BIBLE

  • Dead in trespasses/ sin: “And you were dead in the trespasses and sin which you once walked following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air…”- Eph. 2:1.
  • The old man: is the expression given to the person living in sin, before regeneration and conversion by Jesus Christ- Rom. 6:6.
  • Dogs: the Bible uses this tough word to describe a person living in sin. 2nd Peter 2:22- “It has happened to the true proverb, ‘a dog returns to its own vomit…” Rev. 22:15- “outside are the dogs…”
  • Darkness: is a term used in the Bible to depict sin. Living in darkness is living in sin. Black is the color of darkness and white is used to indicate light, righteousness, holiness. The Lord once said, “as long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world”- John 9:5. The Bible says, “Let your light shine on earth that men may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven”. This means your righteous deeds must be seen- Matt. 5:16.

if we say we have fellowship with God and yet we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth- 1st John1:16.

  • Flesh: refers to living in sin. The deeds of the flesh are; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying’s, murders, drunkenness, revelings and such like…- Gal. 5:19-21.

GOD’S MOST REPEATED CHARACTER IS HOLINESS.

  • Isaiah 6:1-3, in Heaven; in the year king Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up…Vs 3, and one (Angel) called to another and said, “holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.
  • 4:8-11, in Heaven, for the living creatures each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night saying. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”

CONCLUSION

  • Without holiness, no man shall see the Lord- Heb. 12:14.
