THE ROLES OF A MAN

ROLES OF A MAN

  • What does a man do in the 21st century?
  • The traditional family and society, gender roles were clearly defined, roles we predictable.
  • The man owned land, went hunting, made enough children to enlarge the clan.
  • Protected the community and family from hostile tribes – bows, arrows, knife, club ect.
  • Generally the man provided, protected and led the family
  • Each community also had the list of things not allowed for men to do like;
      1. Cooking and kitchen work, sweeping, making the bed.
      2. Knitting, sawing clothes, washing babies, cleaning
      3. These were unmanly and feminine

CHANGES

  • Things have changed so much – men cook/clean babies
  • Traditional village has no prescribed duties for gender
  • Women nowadays bring food home, build houses and are investing
  • Women go to war, study science, politics, play football

CONFUSION

  • During this transition – role confusion
  • Men are confused – they still want a woman to make meals
  • Even when she is an engineer doing hrs
  • Even masai men no longer carry the sword, spear, knife, club, rungu – mkamba – no bow and arrows

Despite the change of roles (STU WEBER) in his book (FOUR PILLARS OF A MAN) he identifies four pillars that a man stands on.

  1. King
  2. Warrior
  3. Mentor

They can be taken as roles of a man in any culture

  • Power is not to be abused – when power gets into the head of a man, the man gets mad. He hurts those he is support to protect – a king is a servant
