VICTORY AT THE TOMB

MARK 16:1-8

INTRODUCTION

What began as a day of doubt, fear and defeat became a day of victory, hope and rejoicing. Jesus had been crucified and the women came to anoint His body. They heard words “He is not here, He is risen! Jesus Christ had the power to conquer the grave. Today is a day of hope and expectation for better things to come. Let us see:-

I.  THE RESURRECTION IS A MESSAGE OF VICTORY (Mark 16:6)

• The women came with a hearts of despair and doubt.
• Their despair was turned to victory. The stone had been rolled away, the angel sat on the stone to preach to them.
• Instead of seeing a cold, dead body, there was an angel who delivered a message of victory.

1. He spoke words of comfort (v.6a)

• Be not affrighted- don’t be alarmed or struck with terror.
• They had come fearful and afraid.
• The Lord was no longer in the grace, He is risen.
• Christ has the power to comfort the broken-hearted, the lonely and afraid.
• May the Lord comfort you in your situation.

1. He spoke words of confidence (6b)

• “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified”
• The angel was well aware why the women were there.
• They had come to anoint a dead Jesus.
• But Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
• They were seeking the living among the dead!
• Are you looking for Jesus among the dead Mohammed, Buddha, Moses, Mary, Abraham etc.?
• Jesus stands alone, He is no longer dead, but alive for evermore.

1. He spoke words of conquest (6c). He is risen.

• “He is not here: Behold the place where they laid Him”
• The women came expecting to find a lifeless body of Jesus.
• But Jesus is no longer in the tomb. He rose victorious over hell and the grave. Never to die again.
• The tomb is empty, we serve a risen Savoir.

1. He spoke words of celebration (V.7-8)

• “ but go your way, tell His disciples and Peter that He goes before you into Galilee, there you shall see Him, as He said unto you”
• Today we rejoice in the good news that our saviour lives!

II.   THE RESURRECTION IS A MESSAGE OF REMEMBRANCE (Luke 24:1-8)

1. Remember Jesus died for you (Rom.5:8, I cor.15:3)
2. Remember Jesus is not in the tomb.
3. Remember Jesus is risen- He is alive forevermore. (I Cor.15:20)

III.  THE RESURRECTION IS A MESSAGE OF HOPE (I Peter 1:3-5)

1. The lost have a reason to hope (John 12:32)

• He is not willing that anyone should perish ( 2Peter 3:9)
• He desires that all men to be saved (I Tim.2:3-4)
• He desires no one to perish (Jn.3:16)
• He is the saviour of all men (I Tim.4:10)

1. We have a reason to hope for a better tomorrow.

• We have a better home ( I Thess. 4;14-17)

1. We have a reason to hope for our redemption (Roman 8:19-25)

• I am looking forward to a day when there will be no more sickness, death and dying.
• No more sleepless nights and doctor visits
• No more cancer, HIV, diabetes, bad teeth, joints, eyes, bad breath, bad hair etc.

CONCLUSION

• The resurrection means life, eternal life.
• Are you saved? Do you walk with Jesus daily?
