SERIES: DIVINE PROTECTION (PSALM 91)
TEXT: PSALM 91:5,6
Everyone who dwells in the secret place of the Most High need not be afraid of the four things listed in these verses. They are: –
- The terror by night.
- The arrow or the sword by day time
- The pestilence or plague in darkness
- The destruction or death at noonday
We are to be people of courage. Courage is doing what you are afraid to do. There cannot be courage unless you’re scared.
Courage is something we all need whether we realize it or not for life can be scary at times!
Fear steals our joy, depletes our strength and paralyzes with terror. Sometimes the Lord calms the storm, sometimes He lets the storm rage and calms His child. Courage is running towards your fears, not from them. Courage is being scared to death but moving up anyway. (Psalm 56:3)
The source of courage is God – El-yon. “The Most High” or God of possession. The owner of everything in heaven and on earth (Psalm 56:1)
Joshua 1:6-9 – God wants you to live with assurance, confidence, faith and hope, He is your hiding place, your safe place, your resting place, He is the shelter of courage for He is the source of courage.
God is the sentry of courage, to guard, to watch over you (Phil 4:6-8)
God is the sustainer of courage – to keep in existence or maintainer – El-Shaddai (Psalm 31:24)
Let us learn:-
I. TERROR BY NIGHT
- The night time is a terror to some people.
- Many evils deeds are carried out at night, killings, rape, assault, robberies and other evil deeds.
- The darkness at night produces a cover for evil.
- Believers should not be afraid of all these things if they have God as a refuge. (2Tim 1:7)
- Fear is the exact opposite of faith when we walk in fear we attract torments.
- Perfect love cast out fear and love is able to carry us through in this life. (Psalm 4:8)
II. ARROWS BY DAY
- Arrows that fly by day, speaks of attacks of the enemy.
- The son of God was manifested to destroy the powers and works of Satan. (John 8:44, 10:10)
- If Satan sees fear in you, he will thrust his arrows towards you.
- An arrow that flies by day time could be any open attack e.g. persecution, invasion, sickness or anything planned to hurt you. “by day” means open attack.
- In Job 3:25 – “for the things, I greatly feared have come upon me and what I dreaded has happened to me.”
- The fear of Job opened a door to Satan, Satan threw arrows to Job, finally God delivered Job. (Job 42)
- Job lived a life of fear, he feared his children might sin against God, curse or attacked God.
- A sacrifice which is motivated by fear is not pleasing to God (Hebrews 11:6)
- Be aware of fear and the doctrine of fear, negative and defeat. For example, don’t say “this sickness will kill me.” Don’t board an airplane it might crash or “our government is poor,” we will die, there will never be enough food for us to survive.”
- But if poverty comes, the scriptures will give you hope (Psalm 37:25)
- Let the poor say “I am rich” let the weak say “I am strong” the joy of the Lord is my strength (Neh. 8:10)
- God’s authority and power comes from His word and confession brings possession
- Negative confession will bring defeat, fear and dread, but positive confession will bring hope and strength (Psalm 23:1-6)
- God took care of Elijah in a serious economic problem and crisis. (I Kings 17:1-16)
III. PESTILENCE OR PLAGUE IN DARKNESS (V. 6)
- This speaks of rushing calamity of plague and wars, if it comes in darkness, we are safe in His protection.
- The word of God is your shield and buckler (Rom 8:35-37)
IV. DESTRUCTION THAT WASTES AT NOONDAY
- The word “destruction” in Hebrew means “to cut off, to fall in a pit, death.
- You should not be afraid of any death that comes unexpectedly, through earthquakes, accidents of any kind, floods, tornadoes, fires etc.
- From these things, you will be delivered and secured.
- My prayer this year 2020 is “O God keep the church from deaths of members and their relatives.
- When destruction comes at noonday, Isaiah 43:1-3, will remind you to speak the word into your situation, your home, children, business, church etc.
- Bind Satan in the Name of Jesus Christ, resist him, he will flee the terror.
CONCLUSION
- God has promised to care, guide and provide for you all the days of your life.
- God’s grace is sufficient for you in all situations and status, father, mother, single, married, man or woman etc.
- God is a shelter of strength for all who will abide in the shadow of the Almighty! (Psalm 31:24)
