THE LORD WAS WITH JOSEPH.

PREACHER: REV. DR. WILLY MUTISO.

TEXT: GENESIS 37 : 36 ; 39 : 1 – 6.

INTRODUCTION:
Joseph had been betrayed by his own brothers and sold as a slave. Joseph had been sold to the Ishmaelite merchants for less than Kshs 8,000. His brothers sold him for the price of a crippled slave! The Ishmaelites took Joseph to Egypt and put him up for sale in Egypt. Sometimes you may suffer more in your Father’s house than anywhere else!
Egypt and the Egyptians were the most civilized people on earth that day. Isaiah 18/19 talks about the Egyptian. The black people of the earth are the ancient Egyptians. Joseph arrived in Egypt about the 19th dynasty of the Pharaohs. It is known that the 19th dynasty comprised of foreign Pharaohs. Imagine the culture shock Joseph must have suffered as he entered the Egyptian empire.
No one could see the meaning of the troubles surrounding young Joseph’s life. But the Bible states in Gen. 39:2 “And the Lord was with Joseph.” God is always with His people to see them through their trials and to accomplish His plans in their lives. Let us learn:

1. God protected Joseph (Gen. 37:36).
A. There was divine providence.
.The intervention of Reuben (Gen. 37:21-22).
.Judah’s idea to sell Joseph as a slave (Gen. 37:26).
.The appearance of the Ishmaelite traders (Gen. 37:28).
.Joseph sold to Potiphar, “the Captain of the guard” (Gen. 37:36).
.Potiphar was the head of the “presidential guard” or secret police.

B. God can use lost people to accomplish His purposes.
.All the events of our lives form part of God’s plan for us.
.God is always in control. He works out His purposes.

C. God protected Joseph.
.By His presence – (Gen. 39:2) Heb. 13:5; Matt. 28:20.
.From a bitter spirit – Joseph surrendered to his hardships.
.By God’s providence (Gen. 39:5-11).
.By giving Joseph help to deal with his past (Eph. 4:29-32).
.By giving to Joseph and to us precious promises (Rom. 8:28; Eph. 1:11; Isa. 46:10; 2 Cor. 4:17-18).

D. Obedience to the Lord may lead us into the eye of the storm (Isa. 53:10).
.God knows the plans He has for you (Jer. 29:11).

II: God prospered Joseph (Gen. 39:2-3).
A. When Joseph arrived in Egypt, he did not have his coat of many colours. But he had character.
.Greatness does not come from clothes but from character of heart.
.They may take away your things but not your character, faith, and integrity.
.Joseph kept his integrity, character, and attitude.

B. When Joseph arrived in Egypt, he kept his course, faith in God, and determination to face the future.
.Purchased by Potiphar but belonged to God.
.Whether in the pit, slave caravan, Potiphar’s house, Joseph kept his integrity and purpose.
.Establish boundaries for your life (alcohol, drugs, adultery, pornography, gossip).

C. God prospered Joseph. God prospers His people.

D. Trials cannot stop God from prospering you. 90% of life is attitude, 10% is what happens to you.

III: God promoted Joseph.
A. Potiphar saw that the hand of God was upon the life of Joseph (v.3).
.He saw his work.
.He saw his results.
.Whatever Joseph touched became gold!
.Potiphar promoted Joseph.
.Always give your best to your employer (Eph. 6:5-9; Col. 3:22-4:1).

B. Joseph rose to the top like cream!

C. Joseph lived a godly life – God promoted him.
.If you are faithful in little, God will promote you to much.
.If you are faithful working for others, God will give you your own.

CONCLUSION:

God used Joseph’s tears to mold him into what He desired Joseph to become.
Our trials teach us to value tears.
God never used anyone greatly without first hurting him deeply” (A.W. Tozer).
“And the Lord was with him” (Gen. 39:2).
God is in the business of protecting you, prospering you, and promoting you for His glory.
