SERIES: “NEARER MY GOD TO THEE.”
TEXT: PSALM 42:7.
Many believers settle for shallow waters-surface-level Christianity that lack intimacy and transformation. God is calling each one of us as His children to deeper living, deeper worship, deeper prayer, deeper in the word and deeper in purpose. “Deeper calleth unto deep at the noise of thy water spouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me”-Psalm 42:7.
There is a divine longing in every soul for something beyond the surface. A longing for depth, connection and meaning. Psalm 42:7, points a picture of the depths of God’s spirit calling to the depths of our spirit.
This is not a shallow invitation, it is a beckoning to intimacy to a deeper experience of God that goes beyond casual devotion or ritualistic religion.
The spiritual journey is one of progressive depths, not static religiosity. This journey into the deep requires intentionality. Just like a diver prepares to dive into the depth of the sea, so must we prepare our hearts to experience the deep things of God.
God is calling you and me into deeper fellowship where mysteries are revealed, burdens are lifted and strength is renewed. Let us learn:-
THE CALL TO DEPTH IS A CALL TO INTIMACY.
- Before God can use anybody, mightily, He must know you deeper. Intimacy is the foundation of depth.
God reveals His secrets to those who are near to Him-Psalm 25:14.
- He shares mysteries with those who spend time in His presence.
Intimacy requires separation from distraction-Matt. 6:6.
- We must enter the secret place to hear His voice.
Relationships grows with intentional fellowship-James 4:8.
- God promises to draw near to those who pursue Him.
Surface-level commitment blocks deep encounter-Luke 10:41-42.
- Mary the sister of Martha chose to draw closer to the heart of God.
- Mary chose the very one thing needed by God-The care of her own soul.
- Moses encountered God face to face because he continually sought Him-Exo. 33:11.
DEPTH IN GOD COMES THROUGH SPIRITUAL HUNGER.
- Without hunger, we will be content with crumbs when GOD has a feast prepared.
Deeper hunger leads to spiritual encounters-Jeremiah 29:23.
- God meets those who seek Him with all their heart.
Hunger fuels persistence in seeking God-Luke 18:1-8.
- Those who press in receive divine answers.
Hunger breaks spiritual complacency-Revelations 3:15-16.
- God is looking for fervency, not luke-warmness.
Hunger for GOD opens portals of revelation-Matt. 5:6.
- The hunger and the thirsty for righteousness shall be filled.
- David’s soul thirsted for God in the wilderness and God revealed Himself-Psalm 63:1-2.
THE JOURNEY INTO GOD REQUIRES SURRENDER.
- Depth demands that we lose control and let God take over every area of our lives.
Full surrender allows God to work freely-Roman 12:1.
- A living sacrifice is usable in the hands of God.
Surrender invites divine transformation-2nd Cor. 3:18.
- As we yield, we are changed into His image.
Surrender is the path to spiritual authority-Gal. 2:20.
- It is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me.
True surrender aligns our will with God’s-Luke 22:42.
- Not my will, but thine be done is the language of the deep.
- It was when Isaiah surrendered that he saw God-Isaiah 6:8.
DEPTH IS MEASURED BY THE FLOW OF THE SPIRIT.
- Ezekiel’s vision of the river-Ezekiel 47, shares increasing levels of spiritual experience.
The ankle level of spiritual experience speaks of initial salvation experience.
- It is the beginning, but not destination.
The knee level symbolizes prayer and intercession.
- Here we learn how to communicate and commune with God.
The loins level speaks of strength and reproduction.
- Fruitfulness increases as we go deeper.
Waters to swim in represent total immersion in God’s presence.
- At this level, the spirit takes full control.
- Jesus Christ was led by the spirit into the wilderness, showing full dependence-Luke 4:1.
THE DEEP IS WHERE DIVINE POWER AND PURPOSE ARE REVEALED.
- If you want to walk in power and fulfill purpose, you must launch into the deep.
Shallow living limits divine manifestation-Luke 5:4-6.
- The miraculous catch happened in the deep.
Purpose unfolds in the presence of God-Isaiah 6:1-9.
- It was in God’s presence, Isaiah discovered his life purpose and assignment.
Power flows from intimacy with the Holy Spirit-Acts 1:8.
- The closer you are to God, the more power you carry.
The deep is where destiny aligns with divinity-Psalm 37:4-5.
- God places His desires in our hearts when we delight in Him.
- Peter moved from fisherman to apostle when he obeyed the call to launch into the deep-Luke 5:10-11.
CONCLUSION
- The call to go deeper is not for a select few-it is for every believer who desires more of God.
- Surface Christianity may be comfortable, but it lacks the fire and fulfilment that only depth can bring.
- God is calling you into deeper place of prayer, revelation, surrender and power.
- Will you answer the call today? The deep things of God are not hidden from us, they are hidden for us.
- Will you choose to make a journey into God?
