NO RAIN

ISAIAH 5:1-25 (6)

Introduction

“I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it” (5:6). Rain is essential for the growth of seed and fruit, without rain for any length of time the people suffer a temporal judgement, especially in hot climates like Kenya. The spiritual rain of the Holy Spirit’s influence is essential in our spiritual life in its growth, ripening and perfecting. Without spiritual life, we have the most terrible judgement. God has given His church the means of grace. Means of grace are the ways in which God blesses His people. The Bible, prayer, the ordinances, fellowship and witnessing are means of grace. To have the means of grace, but no grace with the means is horrible situation indeed. “No rain”

Social economic, political and religious life was at all-time low in Judah. Corruption and injustice were everywhere.

V.8- woe to you who add house to house and join field to field

V.11- Woe to those who rise early to run after their drinks

V.18-Those who sin until their sins are drawn with cart ropes.

V.20- Those who call evil good and good evil

v.21 – Those who are wise in their own eyes.

V.22- Those who are heroes drinking wine and champions in mixing drinks.

Let us consider v.6 “I will command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it”:-

I.  WHAT IT MEANS

  1. Ministers allowed to preach, but without power.
  2. Ordinances celebrated, but without the benediction of the Lord.
  3. Assemblies gathered, but no God’s presence.
  4. The word is read and preached but no application to the heart.
  5. Formality of prayer kept up, but no pleading with God.
  6. The Holy Spirit restrained and grieved by the hearers.
  • This is the case in many lives, assemblies, churches where sin is tolerated.
  • The clouds, ordained to rain are commanded not to do so, by God Himself.
  • God holds the key to both physical and spiritual rain.
  • Outward ordinances and grace of God must be connected for the raindrops to fall.

II.  WHAT IS INVOLVES.

  1. No conversion, for these are by the spirit.
  2. No restoration of backsliders. Withered plants are not revived when there is no rain.
  3. No refreshing of the weary, comfort and strength except by the dew of heaven.
  4. No spiritual activities, lukewarmness reigns through routine unto death. The workers are tired of God.
  5. No holy joys, delights, triumphs and testimony of victory.
  • Everything starts to die when there is no rain, so do all good things suffer when there is no spiritual rain
  • Nothing can make up for it, nothing can flourish without it.

III.  HOW IT MANIFESTS ITSELF.

Spiritual dryness has its own signs in the individual:

  1. The soul experiences no benefit under the word
  2. The man feels glutted with the gospel and wearied with it.
  3. He begins to criticize, cavil and despise the word.
  4. Soon, the people neglect the hearing of it.
  5. The hearer begins to prevent the word, boasting, ridicule or ill-living.
  • When the clouds refuse to rain it is no longer life to life, but death to death.
  • This situation can affect any one of us.

IV.  HOW IT CAN BE REVERTED.

Let us:-

  1. Confess our ill-desert- ask for God’s grace to rain
  2. Acknowledge our dependence upon the heavenly showers of spiritual influence.
  3. Pray incessantly, till, like Elijah, we bring down the rain.
  4. Look alone to Jesus “He shall come down like rain”
  5. Value the least sign of grace- Elijah watched until he saw the little cloud, like the hand of man, arise from the sea.
  6. Use the blessings more diligently when it returns.
  7. Renew your interest in the gathering of the Lords day.

CONCLUSION

  • God’s grace can save souls without any preaching, but all the preaching in the world cannot save souls without God’s grace.
  • The hearer sometimes complains that there is no food for his souls when the truth is there is no soul for the food.
  • When the secret influence from heaven ceases to spear the heart, the best speaking to the ear avails little.
  • Lord, God, send us the Rain, even the Latter rains.
