BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN

(CALL ME IN THE MOURNING)

SERIES: THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM

TEXT: MATTHEW 5:4

God gives favor to those with heavy hearts by offering them His comfort. Those who mourn the departed, those who mourn their own failures confined comfort, those who morn the oppressed and the evil condition of this world and country.

The first key is poor in spirit or humility, the second key to the kingdom of God and living in the fathers favor is mourning.

Nearly all adults and many children are in some stage of mourning right now.

Every one of us at some stage in life suffer disappointment and some kind of hurt.

Disappointment make us grief and recovery becomes a lifelong process.

Sometimes we learn how to cope but grief stays with us for the rest our lives.

Subsequent losses add sorrow upon sorrow. For some people life is never the same, after suffering loss. Life is never the same after losing a close loved one.

We suffer grief ever our own loses, but we also suffer grief over loses of other people around us.

We suffer grief and disappointment over tragedies that occur in our communities and around the world, we grieve injustices and oppression.

We are disappointed with ourselves because of our weaknesses and failures.

We mourn for the human race around the world as we see how people badly treat each other (Russia and Ukraine, maandamano in Kenya).

In the light of all disappoints, sorrow and loses human beings go through, there is one truth we can hold on to until the end of life; “God gives favor to those who mourn, those with heavy hearts by offering them His comfort.” But how does this work? How do we know that comfort is available to us?

There are three kinds of sorrow that will result in comfort from God:-

THOSE WHO MOURN THE DEPARTED CAN FIND COMFORT IN CHRIST-Matthew 5:4.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Blessed in Greek=Makarios).

  • Blessedness speaks of inward contentedness unaffected by surrounding conditions.
  • Throughout the Bible, mourning is usually linked with either repentance or bereavement.
  • God promised to bring comfort to his mourning people during their captivity and times of oppression-Psalm 34:18.
  • “The Lord is close to those who are broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
  • The word, “Comfort” is derived from the Greek word “PARA” meaning “near” and “Kaleo” meaning “I call.”
  • When Jesus said “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted” He meant He will call us near to Himself to give us comfort from sorrow. Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
  • Mourning those who died in faith-we have the assurance that we will be together again-God will raise us up together. And so shall we ever be with the Lord-1st 4:13, 16-17; 2nd Sam. 12:22-23; Psalm 17:15.
  • David expected to see his dead infant son after his own death-He believed in resurrection.

Mourning those with an uncertain future.

  • Those ones did not know the Lord.
  • We mourn them with bitterness, nevertheless the Lord comforts us-Rev. 21:3-4.
  • God blesses those who are being crushed with grief.

THOSE WHO MOURN THEIR OWN FAILURES CAN FIND COMFORT IN CHRIST.

  • The children of Israel were repeatedly unfaithful to God.
  • Eventually in 722 BC God allowed their captivity of Assyria, the Northern kingdom 10 tribes were taken away.
  • In 586BC, the southern kingdom of Judah were taken into captivity to Babylon-God comforted them even in captivity-Isaiah 40:1-2.
  • Sin brings grief to God, to the sinner and to those affected-Rom. 6:23.
  • There is godly sorrow and worldly sorrow-2nd Corinthians 7:10.

THOSE WHO MOURN THE OPPRESSED CAN BRING COMFORT THROUGH CHRIST.

  • We must be concerned and mourn for those who are being oppressed by evil and have not yet received God’s forgiveness and love.
  • The oppression by satan and bondage to the devil is deadly.
  • We mourn the sinning world as we reach out to it with tears-Psalm 126:5.
  • Sin is a deadly killer, but Jesus Christ is the cure of sin and death.
  • How about family members without Christ, our tribes people and fellow citizens.

CONCLUSION

  • When we mourn over departed loved ones we can find comfort in Christ.
  • When we mourn over our own sins we can find forgiveness and comfort in Christ.
  • When we mourn over those who are oppressed we can find comfort in God-Psalm 30:4-5, 11-12.
