FIX YOUR THOUGHTS ON JESUS

SERIES: JESUS IS GREATER AND BETTER THAN ANYTHING

TEXT: HEBREWS 3:1-6

There are so many things going on in our lives. Busy schedules, health issues, business deals, deadlines at work. Bills to pay, thinking about our careers thinking about family and the future etc. It is not easy to focus on one thing, there are many distractions out there that are competing to grab our attention. But the Bible tells us in     Hebrews 3:1, “fix your thoughts on Jesus”

let us learn:-

I.  FIX YOUR THOUGHTS ON JESUS (3:1)

  • True believers in Christ are here called “holy brothers and sisters”
  • They are sanctified by Christ, they are selected and set apart for God.
  • True Christians are God’s children and they are brothers and sisters to each other.
  • We share together in a “heavenly calling”
  • To “fix” means to concentrate our gaze, it is to look away from other things and to focus on one thing “Jesus”.
  • It is not only a call but also a command to fix our thoughts on Christ.
  • Jesus Christ is here identified as our Apostle and high priest.
  • An Apostle means “one who is sent” Jesus is sent from God in heaven to go to earth as His representation.
  • A High Priest is the “one who is a go-between who offers sacrifice so that there can be reconciliation”
  • As Apostle Jesus speaks to us from God, as a High Priest He speaks to God for us.
  • As the Great High Priest, Jesus not only performs the sacrifice, He was the sacrifice, He died on the cross on our behalf.

Story

  • There was a young man who determined to win over the heart of a girl. He really wanted her as a future wife. So the young man started “the campaign” it was a month-long campaign. He started sending the girl every day, the most  wonderful gifts ever. Every day for a month, the greatest gift appeared on the girls’ doorstep. The gifts were delivered every day by DHL. The campaign worked very well. The girl eventually fell in love, she fell in love – but not with the young man – but with the DHL delivery guy!
  • Every day God offers us the greatest gift, Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ is in a campaign to win our hearts.
  • But often, we fell in love with the wrong person or the wrong thing.
  • To fix our thoughts in Jesus requires us to pray and to study the Bible.
  • Remember His faithfulness as Apostle and High Priest.

II.  JESUS IS GREATER THAN MOSES IN HIS PERSON (3:2-4)

  • Jesus is the builder of the house
  • To the British people today, the greatest Briton was Sir Winston Churchill.
  • To the Americans people, the greatest American of all time is George Washington.
  • To the South Africans, the greatest South African of all time is Nelson Mandela.
  • To the Jews, the greatest Jew of all time was Moses.
  • “God’s House” means the people of God – to some Jews they put Moses above Jesus Christ!
  • Now, Moses is part of the house, but Jesus Christ is the builder of the house.
  • Jesus is, therefore, greater than Moses because Jesus is the builder of the house
  • Jesus is the builder of everything, He is the builder of the house of God – His children
  • As the builder, Jesus has the blueprint of your life.
  • Jesus knows what is broken and needs to be fixed in our lives.
  • Let us fix our thoughts on Jesus since He is a builder of everything, creator of our lives.

III. JESUS IS GREATER THAN MOSES IN HIS MINISTRY (3:56)

  • Jesus is the son of God
  • Moses was faithful “as a servant,” Jesus was faithful as a son
  • Moses is a servant ‘in’ all God’s house, but Christ is the son “over” God’s house
  • Moses was the “old covenant”, Jesus is the Minister of the “New covenant” Moses was “a shadow” of the things to come.
  • It is not enough to be “out of Egypt” we must continue to follow Jesus Christ “into the new promised Land”
  • Christianity is not a religion but a relationship
  • We must pursue a relationship with the son of God with confidence and hope.
  • Remember the story of Mary Martha (Luke 10:38-42) – “only one thing is needed, Mary has chosen what is better and will not be taken away from her “- her care for your soul, through the relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Fix your thought on Jesus Christ

CONCLUSION

  • Fix your thoughts on Jesus Christ – He is the Apostle and High Priest
  • Jesus is greater than Moses – He is the builder of the House.
  • Jesus is greater than Moses – He is the son of God. Do you love Him?
