TEXT: GENESIS 41 : 1 – 44.
INTRODUCTION:
Last Sunday, we left Joseph languishing in an Egyptian prison. He was in prison not because he had committed a crime. He was in prison for doing the right thing and for honouring God in his life. He was in prison because he refused to sin with Potiphar’s wife. Joseph was in a place of hardship but he was faithfully serving God.
When we last saw Joseph, he was waiting for a visit from the Butler. He had asked for help to be released from prison (Gen. 40:14-15). The Butler had forgotten Joseph. Today, let us see Joseph delivered from prison and promoted to the palace. We are going to see the unseen hand of God at work. God knows where you are. He knows how to bring you out of your prison and place you in the palace. Let us learn:
I: Joseph and God’s providence (41:1-14).
Anyone looking at the life of Joseph would have said: “His development has been arrested.” “God has forsaken him.” But God’s hand was working behind the scenes to accomplish His eternal plan and purpose. God used three events:
Providence through delays (v.1).
.He waited in prison for two full years since the Butler was released.
.Joseph learnt patience and dependence.
.God has many waiting rooms.
.Providential delays are not easy at all.
B: Providence through dreams (v.1-8).
.Pharaoh dreamed a disturbing dream that caused him distress.
.He called his “wise men”, but they could not interpret the dream.
.The gods of Egypt were not intelligent enough!
.God (Jehovah) made Pharaoh to forget his dream.
.The God of Joseph is sovereign over all things (Isa. 46:10-11; Isa. 43:13; Psa. 135:6; Daniel 2:1-13; 4:3).
.Kings rule at the pleasure of the Lord (Dan. 2:21; 4:32; 1 Sam. 2:7-8).
.Today, God does not speak primarily through dreams and visions but through His Word (Heb. 1:1-4).
C: Providence through deliverance (v.9-14).
God came through for Joseph.
.God comes on His time (Storms, Jairus, Nain, Jacob’s well, Calvary, Salvation).
.God is seldom early, but He is never late.
II: Joseph and Pharaoh (41:15-36).
A: Joseph’s profession (v.15-32).
.Joseph points Pharaoh to the Lord.
.Joseph is not bitter but better!
.When life gets complicated, remember that God is still in control (Rom. 8:28; 2 Cor. 4:17).
B: Joseph’s plan (v.33-36).
.He reveals and interprets the dream.
.He even gives Pharaoh a strategic plan.
.The plan did not originate with Joseph but with God.
III: Joseph and God’s promotion (41:37-44).
A:Joseph’s new position (v.37-41).
.In one instant, Joseph went from slave and prisoner to Prime Minister.
.He became the “Grand Vizier.”
.He became number two in the empire.
.Joseph was now greater than Potiphar!
B: Joseph’s new power (v.42-44).
.He was given the emblems of authority.
.He is placed in the second chariot behind Pharaoh.
.People everywhere in Egypt are commanded to kneel before him.
C: Joseph’s new possessions.
.A ring – power to act as a Pharaoh. He could sign the king’s name.
.A robe – Joseph had lost two coats. He now has a new robe. Joseph held the robe for 80 years.
.A gold chain – the chain of power and authority. Joseph’s dreams are fulfilled. He has gone from the pit to prison to the palace.
.God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What He has done for others, He will do for you.
CONCLUSION:
God is in control of all of life.
God has a plan for your life.
Do you need divine intervention today?
Are you facing situations in your life?
Are you lost? Come to Christ for salvation.
