ISAIAH 46:3-4
INTRODUCTION
God has a word for the ageing. His word for you is that “I will carry you”. God says that from the day we were born till we are old and grey-haired, God will carry us. We can never get to an age where we don’t need to be carried by God. You will never come to a position in life that you don’t need God to carry you. We will never be so anointed that we don’t need to be carried by God. We carry children for many reasons; Comfort, transport, bonding and closeness, fun and excitement. God carries us on eagle wings after difficult and trying time (exodus 19:4). God carries us to overcome weariness (Isaiah 40:31).
When God carries us on eagle wings will have a clear vision (Job.39:27-29). The eagle can see far away, a person with a clear vision can discern, detect, perceive, notice, pick out and make out what other people cannot. (Mark 8:22-25). When God carries us on eagle wings we will have a wonderful and amazing experience or testimony (Prov.30:18-19). When you are carried by God, God will hide you in the rock (Job 39:27-28)
Now the doctrine of the text is the unchanging nature of God and the constancy of His kindness towards His people in providence and grace. During our short sojourn on earth we notice somethings which don’t change; sun, moon, stars, ocean, rocks etc. we see His word and gospel to be still the same. Prayer, praise, communion are the same.
God providence, grace love kindness are immutable. God’s mercies in your youth are the same as in old age. Without doubt, old age has its peculiarities which evidence the firmness of Gods faithfulness and grace.
Let us learn:-
I. OLD AGE HAS ITS PECULIAR MEMORIES.
- It remembers much joy and it sees in them proofs of love.
- It remembers many visits to the hospital and recollects God’s healings.
- It remembers many trials in its loss of friends and locations and it sees God to be the same, yesterday, today and forever (Psalm 37:25)
- It remembers many conflicts with temptations, doubt, Satan, the flesh and the world. It remembers deliverances on the day of Battle.
- It remembers its own many sins, it remembers how many professors have made shipwreck of faith, and it praises God for preservation.
- It remembers that God is unchanging, His love endures forever.
II. OLD AGE HAS ITS PECULIAR HOPES.
- It has now few things to anticipate, but those few are the same as in youth, for the covenant abides.
- The ground of its hope is still Jesus and not long services.
- The reason for its hope is still faith in the infallible Word.
- The preservation of its hope is in the same old hands.
- The end of its hope is still the same heaven, the same crown of life and eternal blessedness.
- The joy of its hope is still as bright and cheering as before.
III. OLD AGE HAS ITS PECULIAR SOLICITUDES.
- Cares are fewer, for business is curtailed, the remaining needs only serve to show that God is the same.
- The body is infirm, but grace makes amends for departed joys of youth, health and activity.
- The mind is weaker, the memory is less attentive, but gracious doctrines are sweeter than ever, eternal promises sustain the heart.
- Death is nearer, but heaven is nearer too. The earth is less lovely, but the home country is dearer.
IV. OLD AGE HAS ITS PECULIAR BLESSEDNESS.
- Deprived of certain enjoyment, old age is enriched by others.
- It has along experience to read, proving the promises of God true.
- It does not waver in biblical doctrines, knowing now what it once guessed.
- It has less to fear in the future of life, seeing the way is shorter.
- It has less business on earth, and more in heaven, it is more heavenly- minded.
- It knows that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.
V. OLD AGE HAS ITS PECULIAR DUTIES.
- These are proofs of divine faithfulness since they cause men to bring forth fruit in old age. They are;
- Testimony to the goodness of God, the unchangeableness of His love and certainty of His revelation.
- Comfort to others who are battling, assuring them they will come off safely.
- Warning to the wayward; such warning coming with hundredfold force from the aged saint.
- A duty to the young urging them to make this God their God, since He will never forsake His people (Heb.13:5)
- A solace to the middle life to persevere for they shall still be carried in the arms of grace.
CONCLUSION
- Men and women of God grow sweeter before they decay.
- Maturity brings a special mellowness.
- We are seeking for a better- country and the city whose builder and architect is God Himself.
- Maranatha- even so- come Lord Jesus Christ.
