SERIES: JESUS CHRIST IS GREATER THAN AND BETTER THAN ANYTHING
TEXT: HEBREWS 6:16-20
We Baptist are among the select people in the community of Christianity. The reason is we belief in Eternal securities of our salvation .We are “as sure for heaven as if we had already been there for 10,000 years”. The Bible clearly teachers us that we have been chosen in Him before the foundations of the world “Eph. 1:4,We have been in heaven for years .God “Raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly place in Christ Jesus “(Eph. 2:6).
This chapter 6 of Hebrews is used by many groups to teach that is possible to lose one’s salvation .But in the same passage we get one of the strongest statements in the Bible concerning eternal security of the believers .In these chapters we see hope. As believers we live in three realms, we live the past, the present and in the future. Our past is taken care of by faith-He saved us, our present is taken care of by Love– He loves us today .Our future is taken care of by hope ,Our hope is built on nothing less ,but the blood of Jesus Christ .(1 Cor. 13:13).How do I know I am gonna go to heaven?
Let us learn:-
I. THE SAINTS HAVE A COVENANT WITH GOD (6:16-18)
- It is confirmed by Gods promise.
- God has given us His own word in this matter.
- Just as God kept His promise to Abraham. (V.13:15)
- He will keep His promise to us. We can take God at His word.
- God has given us a promise in (John 3:16, Rom 10:9-13, Acts 16:31).
- God is immutable (v.17-18) He is unchanging.
- God is the same yesterday, today and forever, He is true to His word. He does not look like man.
- If you have trusted God for the salvation of your soul’s salvation –Rejoice. (1 john 5:11-13).
- It Is Certified By God’s Pledge.
- When God made this promise, He swore by Himself (v17).
- God placed His Name on the line.
- If any child of God lost his/her salvation, God would lose more than the child of God.
- If that ever happened, God would lose His Holy character, while His child would lose his soul. God would have told a lie and He will have to go Hell to!!
- Eternal life is everlasting life (John 10:28).
II. THE SAINTS HAVE A COMFORT FROM GOD(6:18-19)
While it is a wonderful thing to have the Lord’s personal promise and pledge for our salvation. Those verses give us a very strong consolation and encouragement concerning the Eternal welfare of our salvation.
- We have found Asylum in Heaven, “We Have Fled to Take a Refuge” (v.18).
- In the Old Testament there were 6 cities of refuge.
- These cities of refuge were heavens of safety for a person who had sinned by accidentally killing another person.
- Those six cities of refuge were placed along the highways, they were accessible to everyone. There was no obstruction to these cities of refuge.
- The avenger of blood was not allowed into the cities of refuge.
- The one who has run into the city of refuge stayed there until the death of the high priest
- Jesus Christ our great high priest is eternal, He will never die, so we are safe for forever (Heb. 7:25)
- We have fixed an anchor in Heaven (V. 19)
- The writer of Hebrews gives us an illustration of our security (V. 19)
- We are told that we have an anchor.
- An anchor serve to secure a ship in the sea.
- An anchor extends down from the floor of the sea, holding firmly to the rocks that are found there.
- The anchor holds firmly to prevent the ship from being blown about by adverse winds.
- When you get saved, you throw the anchor of faith toward Jesus Christ.
- Jesus is the rock of ages, the storms of life may batter you, but you are anchored.
- The afflictions of life may blow against you, but you are still anchored.
- The waves of adversity may crash into your vessel but you are still anchored.
- The raging seas of sin and temptation will rock our vessels, but our soul is both sure and steadfast, unmovable.
III. THE SAINTS HAVE A CONTACT IN HEAVEN (6:20)
Although we have God’s covenant and comfort, but there is one more element revealed here that gives us even more reason to rejoice in our eternal security which we enjoy in Jesus – we have a contact in heaven!
- The performance of our contact
- He is a ‘forerunner’, a forerunner is “a scout, or one who went ahead of the main group to prepare for their arrival”
- A forerunner is “one who comes in advance to a place where the rest are to follow”
- Sailors would launch a small boat to carry the anchor to less treacherous waters. That small boat in the “forerunner”
- Mountain climbers will often sent the best climber ahead of the group, to attach a lifetime to the summit so that others will be able to make the climb.
- Jesus Christ is our forerunner, He has ascended on high, has affixed the lifetime for the rest of us.
- We are expected in the city, they are preparing for us out there (John14:1-3)
- The positions of our contact. He is the High Priest
- He is our mediator between God and man (I Tim 2:5)
- He has finished the work of atonement for sin, once and for all time (Heb.10:12)
- In the Old Testament tabernacle and temple, there were no chair. Because the work of the priest was never finished.
- In the New Testament, Jesus Christ our great high priest finished all the work and sat down, rested.
- He has completed the job of atonement and salvation. There is nothing I can add – only the goodnews that Christ did it all. (Heb. 7:25)
- Jesus Christ is our contact in heaven, hallelujah.
CONCLUSION
How do I know that I’m gonna go?
- I have God’s own word, I have Christ’s work on it.
- I am “saved to the uttermost and I know that I am washed in the blood of the precious Lamb of God.
- Through the Father, through the Son, through the Holy Spirit I am saved to the uttermost.
- If I stumble along the way – My anchor still holds.
- If the devil attacks me, the anchor still holds.
- Regardless of what life may bring into view, the anchor still holds
- One day the Lord will say welcome hame, you have finally arrived – what a day that will be.
