SERIES: LIVING BY FAITH.
TEXT: HEBREWS 4:12-16.
All Christians will continue to need two things throughout their lives on earth.
- “Mercy”-Forgiveness for our sins.
- “Grace to help in time of need”-God’s favor to help us in time of need.
We will find mercy and grace in answer to prayer as we come confidently to the throne of grace. By confessing our sins to God in prayer, there is mercy-1st John 1:8-9.
By praying for strength from the Holy Spirit, there is grace to help in time of need-Ephesians 3:16-20; Ephesians 6:10-13.
During this present dispensation of grace, God’s throne is “the throne of grace.”
No judgement issues from “the throne of grace.”
At a future time, there will appear “A great white throne” from which God will judge all who have rejected His son, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
My dear Christian friend, are you acquainted with “the throne of grace?”
When did you last appear before the throne of grace?
Our text today says, “Let us come.”
We are to come with boldness to the throne of grace. Mercy and grace will be given to us to prosper in every area of life. Whatever the case, we should come with a mind ready to do the will of God at all times.
There are five things that we need for us to obtain mercy at the throne of grace for our divine breakthrough:-
MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD-Psalm 1:1-3.
- We are urged to come “boldly” or “confidently” so that we can speak freely and frankly to our heavenly father.
- When we take delight in His word to study, understand and practice what is commanded, we will possess the righteousness of God that produce boldness.
- If you truly want God’s best, if you really want to make your way prosperous and have good success, these are the three things you must do:
- Think Biblically (think the word).
- Speak Biblically (speak the word).
- Act Biblically (act the word).
- The result of doing the three IT success-God’s best for you.
- God told Joshua (Joshua 1:8) three conditions:-
- The word is “not to depart from your mouth”- speak.
- You are to “meditate in it day and night”- continually.
- You are to “observe to do according to all that is written in it.”
- In Hebrews 4:11-12 we see the prominence of the word of God.
- God’s word is alive, it contains life, the seed is the word of God.
- God’s word is powerful, it is a sword, a two edged sword, it convicts, it saves. God and His word are one.
- God’s word prevails over everything. God’s word carries its own power.
- God sent His word and healed them.
EXAMINE THE STATUS OF YOUR FAITH-2nd 13:5.
- Apostle Paul said, “Examine yourself as to whether you are in the faith.”
- It means examine whether or not we are remaining faithful to the Lord.
- We need to remember that the danger of backsliding is ever present.
- It is possible to fall away if we neglect our salvation-Heb. 2:1-4.
- It is also possible to develop an evil heart of unbelief-Heb. 3:12-14.
- The text implies that it is possible to know of one’s standing before God.
- You and I are not the final arbitrators when it comes to our status before God-1st 4:4.
- We should not compare ourselves with others, because it is unwise. Other people are not standard by which you measure yourself-2nd 10:12.
- The approval of other people does not mean the approval of God-1st 10:18.
- God is your ultimate judge-2nd 5:10.
REPENT AND RETURN TO GOD WITH SINCERITY.
- Repentance is not merely being sorry and just simply saying “I am sorry”-2nd 7:9-10.
- Repentance involves stopping the sin that is in one’s life-Rom. 6:1.
- Repentance involves choosing to do what is right instead of what is wrong in the future-Romans 6:17-22.
- Repentance is important and we must understand what it is and that God commands it-Acts 17:20.
- Repentance is based upon faith.
- Repentance requires a change in mind and attitude.
- Repentance involves a change in life style.
- Repentance results in forgiveness and restitution.
CALL UPON GOD WITH BOLDNESS AND CONFIDENCE.
- This word “With Confidence” stands for our freedom to approach God without hesitation or inhibition.
- This confidence is made possible by the blood of Jesus Christ-Heb. 10:19-23.
- This passage of the scripture truly gives us the wonderful privileges we have as children of God through prayer to approach our gracious God with full confidence that He hears our prayers.
- We are given the procedure for coming to the throne of grace:
- We are to come boldly or confidently.
- We are to speak freely and frankly to our heavenly father.
- We must never ever be shy about coming to this blessed place.
- We don’t ever need to hesitate to tell God exactly what our need is.
YIELD IN SURRENDERNESS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT.
- Yielding acknowledges we are not our own, our life is hidden in Christ and in God-1st 6:19-20.
- Upon baptism of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit lives in us.
- The life of Jesus Christ in us is a daily, moment by moment experience.
CONCLUSION
- Mercy is one of our primary needs because of our sins and failures. Our heavenly father is “The father of mercies”-2nd 1:3. He is “rich in mercy”-Ephesians 2:4.
- God’s attitude towards those of His children who are in distress is one of mercy, pity and compassion. Let us go to Him with confidence and tell Him all about our needs.
- A further purpose for our coming to the throne of grace is “to find grace to help.”
- Mercy is for those failures of the past and grace is for the present hour of need.
