SERIES: THE 12 STONE MEMORIAL
TEXT: GENESIS 30:14-20.
Today we once again revisit Leah giving birth to two more sons, her 5th and 6th son.
- Now that the family has been through a time of trying to make things happen on their own through their maidservant, they get back to producing the final four sons through Leah and Rachel.
- These two final sons are in the same place. They speak of God’s response to us. Leah’s first four sons were of what we give to God. Her final 2 sons speak of what God gives us.
- We find many places is scripture, where these two sons are linked together-Deut. 33:18-19 which Moses blessings to each of the tribes.
- The danger we have is that sometimes we are not in the right place to receive God’s blessings including His presence. Let us learn:-
DO YOU REMEMBER LEAH?
- Leah was tender eyed. She had great qualities except beauty. She was not highly favoured, God loved Leah, God’s love for you and me is what matters.
- The name means weary.
Weariness is one of the greatest barriers and obstacles to the life that the church is designed to have.
- Weariness will cause you to stop short of the mark. It will cause you to miss out on what is truly available.
- The name Leah means impatient.
The church is often times impatient and guilty of jumping the gun and going after the things before she is ready.
- The name Leah means grieved. Grief is part of life, but the issue with the church is that she often takes on way too much grief and hurt.
- The major danger and pitfall in the church is to try and do whatever is necessary to avoid grief and hurt.
- The offended church can become destructive to themselves and to others around them. Hurting people hurt people and offended people tend to offend others.
- We must deal with hurt and offences through forgiveness and avoid bitterness.
ISSACHAR
- Issachar means there is recompense or repayment or reward.
- Recompense is to make amends to someone for loss or harm suffered.
- Reward means a fair return for good or bad behair.
- Leah became pregnant on a night with Jacob that she essentially purchased from Rachel.
- Leah made a declaration that God had rewarded her, however we don’t hear God say that.
- Issachar speaks of a reward and which while he may have been good for Israel we have no guarantee that he was a reward to Leah for her behaviour.
- Jacob says Issachar is a strong donkey, labourer. Issachar remained a problem, willing to trade liberty for material things of life. He ended up a slave to foreign interest, the Canaanites and Babylon.
- In 1st 12:32, Issachar is given a blessing, he could understand the times, the children of Issachar became reliable, valiant, brave and bold men.
- They were prophetic, understanding seasons and times. They gave direction to Israel.
- There are three levels of understanding visions and dreams.
- Issachar understanding; the ability to use knowledge or understanding of times to interpret the moves of God. This is the simplest level.
- It involves using the understanding of times, seasons and signs to predict accurately the mind of God. The children of Issachar were in this category-1st 12:32.
- Zachariah understanding; this is higher level of understanding. The Bible describes Zachariah is an example of man that receives revelation from God and has ability to interpret it in line with the mind of God.
- This type of understanding has positive effect on people around him. It was the understanding of Zachariah that King Uzziah tapped into and prepared-2nd 26:5.
- Daniel understanding. It is the highest of the three levels. Daniel like we know has divine ability to capture other people’s visions and dreams and give the interpretation-Daniel 1:17.
ZEBULUN
- Zebulun means honor or to be exalted. Leah named him declaring that people Jacob would treat her with honor.
- Many people take a false humility approach and in doing so sometimes even shun the honor of God.
- God wants to honor His own. But what if we live as though God’s honor and God’s favour isn’t enough?
- Why do we look for honor, favour and approach from places and people that don’t even matter?
- The misconception is that it is what we do that causes the honor and favour of the father.
- Jacob was drawn to Rachel. We was drawn to the ewe/sheep, then to the weary-Leah-the trouble maker-Bilhah and the trickle down-Zilpah.
- If we are not willing and able to be sheep of His pasture, we will continue to search and search for what makes Him happy without truly finding it.
- Leah gave birth to many good things but the danger was that if she did not get her heart and attitude right she was going to ultimately miss out, gifts, communication with God, unity with God, praise, reward, honor.
- We can miss God’s best because of weariness, impatience, grief and offense.
- Leah finally got it right-she was the one ultimately buried with Jacob.
- In death she was in good company, the grave/tomb held Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Leah-Genesis 49:31.
