JESUS CHRIST: THE CAPTAIN OF OUR SALVATION

SERIES: LIVING BY FAITH.

TEXT: HEBREWS 2:5-18.

The theme of the book of Hebrews is Jesus is better. Jesus is better than angels, better than Moses, better than Aaron, better covenant, better High Priest, better offering, better blood, better captain etc.

Hebrews was written to Hebrew christians and therefore to us even today.

Our world tells us that we are creatures of evolution, that over the course of billions of years we have evolved to our present state of existence. But we were not after all no that better than all the other members of the animal kingdom. But the writer of Hebrew in 2:2 says that we are created “A little lower” than the angels. “A little lower” actually means “Lower for a little while.”

When God created man, He made him in one way lower than angels. It is not that man is lower than angels in importance to God. Man is lower than angels in that he is physical and angels are spiritual, but this is only for “little while” are men lower than angels.

Angels as great and glorious as they are will not rule in the world to come. The Bible says we will actually judge the angels.

God’s intention is that the children of God rule in the world to come.

Angels will one day yield to man, so God’s ultimate plan is for His kingdom to be ruled by redeemed men and women.

The writer of Hebrews quotes-Psalm 4:6 to prove God’s original plan for mankind. In Genesis 1:28 we are informed that man was given rule over the world. “The God blessed them and God said to them, be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it, have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air and over everything that moves on the earth.”

But Adam sinned and everything became cursed. Man lost his dominion over nature.

As a result (Romans 8:19-22) creation groans “for the ear most expection of creation eagerly waits for the reveling of the sons of God.”

Vs. 20-For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope.

Although sin interrupted God’s plan for the human race, it has by no means changed those plans.

The writer of Hebrew’s now introduces us to four reasons that Jesus came into the world. Let us learn:-

JESUS CAME TO REGAIN OUR LOST DESTINY-2:8-9.

  • 8. Reminds us that although the intention of God have been to have all things in subjection to man, that is not where it stands now.
  • All things are not subject to man.
  • Man was meant to have dominion over everything but he has not.
  • Today man is a creature who is frustrated by his circumstances, defeated by his own weakness, defeated by temptations.
  • He who is supposed to be free is bound.
  • He who should be king is a slave.
  • Man is not what he was created to be.
  • Man does not have dominion over everything including himself. Man’s efforts to master the earth are marred at best.
  • Man is subject to destructive forces of natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and tsunamis.
  • Man is ravaged by disease and grows old and is conquered by death.
  • Everything is obvious not subject to man, that is not yet!

In verse 9 we read the words “but we see Jesus” Jesus is God’s answer to man’s dilemma.

  • Jesus became man, he suffered and died for man’s sin to restore the dominion that was lost as a result of sin.

JESUS CAME TO RELATE TO OUR DIFFICULTIES-2:10-13.

  • 10 “It was fitting for Him-to bring many sons to glory.”
  • To bring us to glory, Jesus became man.
  • He is now the captain (pioneer), He opened the way for us to follow.

JESUS CAME TO RELATE US FROM OUR BONDAGE TO DEATH-2:14-15.

  • Man is not only in bondage of sin but the bondage of death.
  • Verse 15 identifies the problem as “the fear of death.”
  • Even to those who say they don’t believe in the reality of God, death is terrifying.
  • Many people live in terror and denial of death, fear enslaves people.
  • Many of us don’t like to think about death, yet death is inevitable.
  • This constitutes a form of slavery, slavery to the fear of death.
  • The fear of death enslaves everyone, either into a dream of denial or escapism or narcotic release.
  • In verse 14, by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, He rendered death “powerless.”
  • In 1st Corinthians 15:20-22; 26:54-58.
  • The sting of death which is sin has been removed.
  • The judgement beyond death does not have to be feared.

JESUS CAME TO RESTORE US FROM OUR DEFEAT-2:16-18.

  • According to verse 17, in the death of Christ he was performing the work of a high priest. “He made propitiation for the sins of the people.
  • In the Old Testament the high priest of Israel entered into the Holy of Holies. Once a year on the day of atonement-he entered there with blood to pour it on the mercy seat. God would then see the people through the blood of a blameless lamb.
  • Jesus Christ offered His own blood “Once for all time” sacrifice for sin upon the cross.
  • Jesus Christ is our propitiation, our “mercy seat.”
  • Under the New Testament the “mercy seat” has now become the “seat of grace” or the “throne of grace.”
  • At death Christ is able to give us “aid” in that like a mother he can hear our cry-He runs to the cry of His children.
  • We have a Savior who understands us in life and in death.
  • Jesus is therefore the captain of our salvation.
  • Our captain is experienced, He was made perfect through suffering-Heb. 2:10.

CONCLUSION

  • Jesus came to regain our lost destiny.
  • Jesus came to relate to our difficulties.
  • Jesus came to release us from our bondage.
  • Jesus came to restore us from our defeat.
  • Jesus is the captain of our salvation.
