JESUS IS BETTER THAN ANGELS – A MORE EXCELLENT NAME

SERIES: THE GREATNESS OF JESUS – JESUS IS BETTER

TEXT: HEBREWS 1:4-14

Jesus Christ is greater and better than Angels. God has given His Son a more excellent name than any name in all creation. Since God has given Jesus a more excellent name than any other name, including angels, we must yield our lives to His Lordship. If I had an opportunity to change my names, I would call myself better names!!

Angels are special messengers who worship the Son and do His bidding (V.7). Angels are ministering Spirits, who minister to the heirs of salvation (V.14). Some people worship angels, yet angels are not to be worshipped. our focus of worship must always be on the Lord Jesus Christ for God has given His Son a more excellent Name than that of the angels. The Names of Jesus is superior to all other names in heaven and on earth. God has given Jesus Christ His son a more excellent name in all of creation.

Let us learn:-

I.   JESUS CHRIST IS THE SON OF GOD (HEB 1:4-7)

  1. The angels are servants, while Jesus is the Son.
  • To be a son in a family is superior than a servant
  • The Lord Jesus Christ is the unique Son of God, begotten one of a kind.
  1. Angels are worshippers, while the Son is the object of their worship
  • The object of our worship is one who is greater than ourselves
  • The angels worship Christ who is greater than the angels

II.   JESUS CHRIST IS OUR GOD AND KING (HEB. 1:8-9)

  • The Father say of the Son “Your throne, O God.” “God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself”
  1. As God Jesus Christ is the eternal king (Heb. 1:8) “your throne O God is forever and ever” His kingdom will know no end. He is eternal.
  2. Jesus Christ is a righteous King (Heb. 1:8) His kingdom is righteousness and truth.
  • The good news for us that though we were sinners by nature and by choice, we are made the righteousness of God in Jesus (II Cor. 5:21)
  1. Jesus Christ is the anointed king (Heb. 1:9) “Therefore God, your God has anointed you with oil of joy more than your companions”
  • His kingdom is full of the joy of the Lord. Oil in the Bible is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, who fills us with the joy of the Lord.

III.   JESUS CHRIST IS LORD (HEB. 1:10-12)

  • The word “Lord” in Greek is the word “Kurios” signifying “having power” or “authority.” He is Lord, Master, owner. He is the “Lord Jesus”
  1. As Lord, Jesus is the eternal creator (V. 10-12)
  • God the Father addresses Jesus Christ as Lord because He is the creator of all things, moreover, Jesus Christ is eternal (10-12)
  • When the earth is no more Jesus will still be the same “they will be changed, but you remain the same and your years will not fail” (Heb 13:8)
  1. As Lord, Jesus reigns at the Father’s right hand (V. 13)
  • “After Jesus had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” V.3
  1. As Lord, Jesus’ enemies are destined to become a footstool for His feet.
  • Jesus Christ is destined to reign victorious over His enemies.
  • God never said to any angel “sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”
  • This means the work Jesus Christ did at the cross was accepted by the Father.
  • Jesus Christ has won the battle over His enemy.
  • A day is coming when all His enemies will be under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed will be death.
  1. As Lord, Jesus Christ sends the angels to minister to those who will inherit salvation. Angels are ministering spirits DIAKONIAN (Greek) or Deacons. Angels are heavenly deacons or servants.

CONCLUSION

  • Since God has given His Son a more excellent Name than the angels, we should respond according to (Phil. 2:9-11)
  • Jesus Christ accomplished the work of salvation. Our forgiveness and eternal life are now possible, to those who believe.
  • Confess Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, live your life in the light of your confession, live your life to the glory of God. Amen.
