JESUS IS BETTER – THE BETTER PRIEST

SERIES: JESUS IS GREATER AND BETTER THAN ANYTHING

TEXT: HEBREWS 7:1-28

When the letter of Hebrews was written, there was a lot foolishness going on. The writer had to stop writing what he needed to say in order to go over the basics of the Christian faith. The people were not maturing in Christ. The writer of Hebrews at this point in time decides to go ahead and write to them about Jesus Christ being our high priest and king. Outside the book of Hebrews, there only four (4) verses in the rest of the Bible that speak about Melchizedek. Our text today reveals and present a full picture of Melchizedek. Melchizedek was made like the son of God. Jesus Christ is the original and Melchizedek is the copy. (Gen. 14:18-20)

Let us learn:-

I.  JESUS IS A BETTER PRIEST BECAUSE (HEBREWS 7:1-2)

  1. HE IS PRIEST AND KING
  • Why would the writer bring Melchizedek into the picture?
  • Melchizedek is only briefly discussed in the life of Abraham (Gen. 14:18-20)
  • It is because those Jewish Christians were familiar with their traditions.
  • Every man that become a priest had to verify his genealogy and give proof that he was from the tribe of Levi.
  • Some of these Jews were saying “Jesus Christ is not from Levi, but from Judah.
  • They were questioning the credentials of Christ as priest.
  • The writer reminds them that, many years earlier, Abraham had gone out to fight 4 kings and after victory, he met Melchizedek, the high Priest, this Melchizedek had no father and mother. No beginning no end. He was a priest forever
  • Melchizedek was not from the tribe of Levi, but he was a priest.
  • Melchizedek was not only a priest but a king also.
  • Jesus is high Priest and King. He is coming again as our Lord and Savior (Heb. 7:2)
  • His name means “king of righteousness”
  1. JESUS IS BETTER PRIEST BECAUSE HE IS KING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND KING OF PEACE
  • There cannot be true peace with God until there is righteousness
  • Man has tried to find peace through many things, but he will never find peace until he finds it is God’s righteousness.
  • God demands righteousness and justice
  • As sinners we never have righteousness apart from the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
  • Once we are cleansed through the blood of the lamb we then have God’s peace (Hebrews 7:4-10).
  1. JESUS IS BETTER PRIEST BECAUSE HE DESERVES OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS (Heb.7:3)
  • We give tithes and offerings to God as worship.
  • God does not really need our money, we are to give it freely to Him as token of our love.
  1. JESUS IS BETTER PRIEST BECAUSE, HE IS KING AND PRIEST FOREVER.
  • Jesus will reign as king of kings and Lord of Lords
  • He will remain as our great High Priest forever.

CONCLUSION

  • If you want something that will last, then anchor your life in Jesus Christ
  • Jesus Christ is our everlasting King and Priest.
  • Jesus Christ demands righteousness first and then you will receive peace.
  • Jesus Christ is our righteousness and our peace, receive Him today
