SERIES: REVIVAL KINGS OF JUDAH
TEXT: 2nd CHRONICLES 23, 24:1-27
PREACHER: REV. DR. WILLY MUTISO
The young King Joash only stood because Jehoida the high priest stood. There are people that only stand because someone else is standing.
After the reign of King Solomon, the nation of Israel was divided into two kingdoms, Israel- the Northern kingdom-ten of the tribes, Judah-the Southern kingdom- 2 of the 12 tribes (Judah and Benjamin).
Israel had 19 kings- all of them bad kings. Judah had 20 kings- 8 kings were good and 5 of the 8 kings were revival Kings.
The 5 revival Kings were Asa, Jehoshaphat, Joash, Hezekiah and Josiah.
God raised the 5 revival Kings to bring times and periods of revival and reformation of the nation. The Old Testament books of 1st and 2nd Kings and 1st and 2nd Chronicles overlap and cover the same period of history. They are similar. The 1st and 2nd Kings present mainly an historical account of the 2 nations.
1st and 2nd Chronicles presents “God’s view of history. “ 2nd Chronicles is a “book about revival.”
Each of the 5 godly Kings represent 5 different principles of revival and restoration.
- Asa- Obey God’s law.
- Jehoshaphat- Teaching the word.
- Joash- Paying what is due (restitution).
- Hezekiah- Cleansing the temple.
- Josiah- Return to hearing God’s word.
Joash was the great grandson of Jehoshaphat. His grandmother was Athaliah who was daughter of Ahab King of Israel. She married the King Jehoshaphat- 2nd Chronicles 23:10-12.
Athaliah was very wicked and evil woman. Thank God Joash’s great aunt saved his life and preserved the line of David.
- Joash was the only surviving heir to the throne of David.
- Being hidden from the wicked queen Athaliah for 6 years by the high priest Jehoida.
- For six years Jehoida the high priest waited.
- For six years Athaliah usurped the throne.
- For six years she led the nation into idolatry.
- For six years the process of Baal prospered.
- But still Jehoida waited until the time was right.
2nd Chronicles 23 tells us that the 7th year, Jehoida made his move.
- He gathered faithful men of Judah together and they crowned Joash king at the age of 7 years.
- 11-15- Jehoida was a godly man, a servant of God, he had no selfish motives or ambitions.
- Jehoida only wanted God’s will, not his own.
- Since Joash was king, only at 7 years Jehoida was regent of the nation of Judah.
Let us learn:-

THE DOWNFALL OF JOASH
Four things let to the downfall of king Joash.
- As long as Jehoida was around to guide him Joash was good but after Jehoida died, he followed the people and not God- 2nd Chronicles 4:2, 27.
- He stood because Jehoida stood. “I am because you are.”
- African ‘Ubuntu’ you are because I am, I am because you are.”
- He neglected the strongholds- 24:18.
- The high place of devil worship were not brought down 2nd Kings 12.
- He surrendered the sacred- 2nd Kings 12:17-18.
- He bribed the enemy with the things of God.
- Do we give a way that which belongs to God?
- God or our job, God or our budget, God or our pleasures?
- He ignored God’s message, Joash killed the messenger.
- The death of Joash- Vs. 25.
- God’s judgement fell upon Joash for his sins and he was murdered in his sleep.
- When he died he was buried not with the kings.
CONCLUSION
- In true revival- people turn back to God.
- In true revival- not all the people turn back to God to the same extent. Some turn back wholly, some partially.
- Some turn back from all sin, some hung on to some of their sins.
- Sin always bring judgement from God.
- Genuine revival involves both turning to God and turning from sin.
