TEXT: GENESIS 39 : 7 – 23.
INTRODUCTION:
God wants us to be faithful. He wants us to stay on course and run the race for His glory until He calls us home. Joseph teaches us how to be faithful inspite of what we may face in this life. Today, we are going to learn about the power of a faithful life. God expects us to be faithful. Joseph seems to have had a basic plan for defeating temptations. At the same time, Joseph had a contingent plan if things went out of control. Let us learn:
I: Joseph was faithful in-spite of temptations (39:7-12).
A. Joseph was handsome (v.6). I don’t know, but beauty must bring with it many problems.
.His external and internal beauty caught the eye of Potiphar’s wife. Potiphar could have been an absentee husband.
.She began to flirt (v.7).
.She became very aggressive: “Lie with me” (v.10).
On a certain day, alone in the house, she grabbed Joseph, saying, “Lie with me” (v.11-12).
.Joseph “lost” the second coat in her hands.
B. This was a “trial by fire.”
1.It was a temptation to fulfill a natural and legitimate need – sex.
.God made us sexual beings. However, any sexual activity outside marriage is either fornication or adultery.
.Either one is a sin against God, your spouse, your future spouse, or yourself (v.9). 1 Cor. 6:18-20.
.Joseph refused and ran out of the house (v.12).
.Flee from youthful lusts (2 Tim. 2:22).
2. Joseph was a long way from home in a strange land.
.He did not believe in the motto “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
.Joseph did not care where he was – he was faithful.
.He refused to violate the trust of his master.
.His family would not have known, Potiphar also.
.But he feared God (Pro. 15:3; Heb. 4:13).
3.Mrs. Potiphar was surely a beautiful woman.
.Egyptian women were renown for their beauty.
.Joseph was a man of conviction.
4.It came on the heels of a big promotion and perfect timing and opportunity.
.He was in charge. He was the king of the roost.
.He could have said, “This is the fruit of my labours.”
.There was no one at home. “Home alone.”
.The only thing that stopped Joseph was “integrity.”
.Opportunities to sin will be offered you (Pro. 13:15).
C. Something about temptation.
1. Temptation is never from God (James 1:13).
2. Temptation is always from within (James 1:14-15).
3. There is always a way out of temptation (1 Cor. 10:13).
.Deal with it immediately – nip it.
.Deal with it realistically – get away.
.Deal with it ruthlessly – avoid it.
.Deal with it consistently – resistance.
.Deal with it confidently – 1 Cor. 10:13.
D. Joseph remained faithful – he saw sin as wickedness and an affront to God (v.9).
II: Joseph was faithful in spite of trials (39:13-19).
A. “Hell has no fury like a woman scorned.”
.Mrs Potiphar has been scorned and she sets her trap.
.When Joseph runs out, she rumples her hair, messes her makeup, and tears her clothes. She starts to cry and scream.
.The other servants come running.
.She tells them that Joseph tried to rape her.
.She now has an exhibit and witnesses.
.Mr. Potiphar arrives home and is accused of bringing the Hebrew boy home to rape her (v.17).
.Mr. Potiphar is angry.
B. Joseph is committed to prison (Psalm 105:17-19).
C. There are times when you will be attacked, misunderstood, and misrepresented. Remember that God knows the truth and, eventually, that truth will come out!
D. Trust God and stay on course. Be faithful (1 Cor. 2:4).
III: Joseph was faithful in-spite of tragedies.
A. Joseph is in the pit again. He has lost two coats! He is in prison.
.He did in prison what he was doing in Potiphar’s house and what he used to do in Jacob’s home – being faithful.
.V.21 – “The Lord was with Joseph.”
.God showed him mercy.
.V.23 – God prospered Joseph.
B. When the bottom falls out of your life – trust, be faithful (Job 14:1; 5:7; John 16:33).
.God has an eternal plan for you (Jer. 29:11; Rom. 8:28; Psa. 37:23; 2 Cor. 4:17).
C. God blessed Joseph in prison. Joseph was faithful.
.Just live for Jesus, keep praying, keep going to church, praise Him. Be faithful in the prisons of your life.
CONCLUSION:
Joseph was faithful. Jesus was faithful. Be faithful each day until death. I would rather have Jesus.
