BECOMING A MORE CONFIDENT PERSON

SERIES: JESUS CHRIST IS BETTER THAN ANYTHING

TEXT: HEBREWS 3:1-19

Today let us see habits for becoming a more confident person. In this third chapter of Hebrews, Jesus Christ is compared to one of the greatest religious heroes of all time – MOSES. Moses was a great man of God. The faith he expressed in God and the exploits he achieved for God are legendry. But as great as Moses was, he was only a servant in God’s house. But Jesus is in charge of God’s house as the Son of God. In verse six (6) the writer of Hebrews tells us that “ we are God’s house (people) if we hold on to our courage and confident in the hope of which we boast”

We ought to “keep our courage and remain confident in Christ”

The recipients of this first century letter were not very confident people. They were discouraged because of the chaos they were facing in the form of persecution. Today we live in a chaotic world, and one of the characteristics we need today in order to establish calm is courage and confidence. The Hebrews were losing their confidence. We, like them need to be confident in Christ. You don’t have to be born confident, you can learn how to be confident and courageous person.

If you are fed up with feelings of insecurity and inadequacy and insignificant, today’s message is for you. If you want to be a confident person in your relationship, in work place, college, school, church or community, then pay attention today. Instill these principles in your daily life. We fail as Christians because we fail to establish habits. Let us learn three habits that will boost our confidence:-

I.  HABITS # 1 – KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS CHRIST (Hebrews 3:1-2)

  • This is the main component to remaining calm in chaos “think carefully about Jesus”
  • Everything we do is affected by our thinking
  • The Hebrew Christian were thinking about turning back to the prophets, angels and priests of the Old Testament.
  • They were thinking of turning back to the man who received the law from God –Moses
  • God says “don’t look at the prophets or angels or the priest or even Moses, look at my son JESUS!”
  • Even us today, we can’t maintain our confidence if we are looking anywhere else than at Jesus.
  1. If I am going to be a confident person I can’t look back
  • The Hebrews wanted to look back to Moses
  • He was a great man, but on the subject of having confidence, he was not the best example.
  • When God called him from the burning bush, he was so lacking in confidence God had to call his brother Aaron to do the talking for him.
  • Don’t think about the past in any way that will negatively impact the present.
  • Don’t live off of past successes and don’t just dwell on your mistakes, your sins, your failures or the bad things that have happened in your life.
  • You confessed your sins, don’t let the devil or anyone else make you dwell in the past.
  • Don’t boast on the hurtful things others have said and done to you in the past.
  • Anyone who stays focused on the past will lose their confidence. (Luke 9:62) Phil 3:12-16
  • If you are going to be a confident person you cannot afford the luxury of looking back.
  1. If, I am going to be a confident person I can’t look down
  • Feeling sorry for myself never got me anywhere in life.
  • The word of God challenges us to an attitude of faith, expectancy and assurance. (Isaiah 26:3)
  • If I am going to be a confident person I can’t afford to waste time on my past mistakes or my present troubles. I can’t look back and I can’t look down.

II.  HABITS #2 KEEP MY HEART TENDER (Heb. 3:7-8)

  • When my life is battered and baffled by the disorganization and confusion of chaos, I am tempted to become cynical and hard hearted.
  • When my heart is hardened I may say “it hurts too much to care anymore – I would not care any longer”
  • When your heart is hard, God cannot work with you.
  • God wants me to have a tender heart, a teachable, pliable, moldable heart. So:-
  1. Learning what I should from past blessings will help keep my heart tender (Mark 6:51-52)
  2. A passion for God’s word will help keep my heart tender (2Kings 22:19).
  • King Josiah had a tender heart

III.  HABIT #3 KEEP OTHERS IN YOUR PLAN (Heb. 3:12-13)

  • I am more confident when my plans include others
  • “Warn each other daily” – to warn “Parakaleo” is to call near, to invite, invoke, comfort and exhort
  • Encourage each other daily
  1. I think of others because they need it.
  2. I think of others because I need it
  • If I am not involved in other peoples’ lives then they are not able to be encouraging me on a regular basis (Acts 2:46)
  • I must be involved in daily encouragement with others (Heb. 10:25)

CONCLUSION

  • Have you heard God’s voice today?
  • Today when you hear His voice don’t harden your hearts (V.7-8)
  • Which habit or habits do you need to begin or recommit yourself to TODAY?
  1. Christ in clear focus
  2. My heart tenderness
  3. Others included in my plans
