SERIES: JESUS CHRIST IS GREATER AND BETTER THAN ANYTHING
TEXT: HEBREWS 4:12-16, 4:1-16
All Christians will continue to need two things throughout their lives.
- “Mercy” – forgiveness for our sins
- “Grace” – God’s favor to help us in the time of need
The true believer finds these two things in answer to prayer. By confessing our sins to God in prayer there is mercy. (I John 1:9) by praying for strength from the Holy Spirit there is grace to help in time of need (Eph. 3:16-20, 6:1-13)
This present dispensation of grace, God’s throne is “the throne of grace” judgement does not flow from the throne of grace.
In the final day there will appear “the great white throne” from which God will judge all who have rejected His son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
When did you last appear before the throne of grace? There are five things that are needed for us to obtain mercy at the throne of grace for our divine breakthrough.
I. MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD (PSALM 1:1-3) HEB. 4:12-13)
- We are urged to come “boldly” or “confidently” so that we can speak forcely and frankly to our heavenly Father.
- When we take delight in His word, to study, understand and practice what is commanded, we will possess the righteousness of God that produce boldness.
- If you want God’s best and make your way prosperous and have good success – think God’s word, speak God’s word and act God’s word.
- The result of doing the word of God is success – God’s best.
- According to Joshua 1:8, there are three conditions
- The word is “not to depart from your mouth”
- You are to “meditate in it day and night” continually
- You are to “observe to do according to all that is written in it”
II. EXAMINE THE STATUS OF YOUR FAITH (I COR. 13:5)
- Paul said “examine yourselves to see if you are in the faith.
- Are we faithful to the Lord?
- The danger of backsliding is ever present (Heb. 2:1-4)
- It is possible to develop an evil heart of unbelief (Heb. 3:12-14)
- We cannot compare ourselves with others, or trust their approval
- To compare ourselves with others is unwise (2 Cor. 10:12)
- The approval of others does not mean the approval of God (I Cor. 4:3)
- It is the Lord who is the ultimate judge (2 Cor. 5:10)
- It is the commendation of the Lord that makes one approved (2 Cor. 10:18)
III. REPENT AND RETURN TO GOD WITH SINCERITY
- Repentance is not merely being sorry and simply saying “I am sorry” (2 Cor. 7:9-10)
- Repentance involves stopping the sin that is in one’s life (Roman 6:1)
- Repentance is important and we must understand it. (Acts 17:30)
- It is based upon faith
- It requires a change in mind and altitude
- It requires a change in lifestyle
- It results in forgiveness
IV. CALL UPON GOD WITH BOLDNESS AND CONFIDENCE
- CONFIDENCE MEANS FREEDOM TO APPROACH God without hesitation or inhibition
- This confidence is made possible by the blood of Jesus Christ (Heb. 16:19-22)
- Always utilize this privilege of appearing before God
- We should never shy to come to the blessed place. -Tell God confidently what you need.
V. YIELD IN SURRENDERNESS TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
- Yielding means you acknowledge that you are not your own. Our life belong to God. (I Cor. 6:19-20)
- When you yield yourself to God, His anointing power destroys the yoke of sin and bad habit.
CONCLUSION
- Mercy is one of the primary needs because of our sins and failures.
- Our heavenly Father is “The Father of mercies” (2 Cor. 1:3). He is rich in mercy (Eph. 2:4)
- God’s attitude toward those of His children who are in distress is one of mercy, pity and compassion.
- Let us go to Him with confidence and tell Him all about our need.
- Mercy is for those failures of the past. Grace is for present hour of need. So, let us come boldly to Him.
