SERIES: DELIVERANCE
TEXT: II KINGS 5:27; II KINGS 7:9; 8:4; GAL. 3:13
Today we want to understand what a curse is, how curses affect us, does the Bible talk about curses the story of how Gehazi was healed of his leprosy (curse) and how Jesus took away the curse of the law!!
WHAT AND WHY IS A CURSE?
- WHAT IS A CURSE?
- A curse is a wish (verbal) for evil or misfortune to befall a person often by someone who feels they have been wronged.
- Many films today have a curse in them – “Pirate of the Caribbean; The curse of the black pearl, snow white, curse of the mummy, Ella Enchanted etc.
- Many people feel like their family have a curse on them.
- Today there is much talk on “Generational curses” But when you are born again you are set aside by the blood, separated from your generational lineage.
- In many African countries Voodoo and witchcraft is a common place. Witch-doctors and witches are to cast spells on people.
- If we are saved and walking in the spirit we are immune from witches (I John 5:18).
- We are covered under the blood we have power over evil spirits in the name of Jesus Christ.
- In Luke 10:19 and 1st John 4:4, the Lord Jesus Christ gave us authority to drive over evil spirits. (Matt 10:1)
CURSES IN THE BIBLE:
- God does not want us to put curses on people (Matt 5:44; Rom 12:14)
- Curse from God is a very serious matter. The bigger curse is to violate the Law of God-(Gal 3:10, Deut. 27:26.
- Sickness and death are two visible results of curses from God-(Isaiah 24:6)
CAN A CURSE BE REVERSED?
Gehazi received a curse.
- In 2nd Kings 5:27, when Gehazi Elisha the prophet’s servant, lied and stole property of Naaman the ex-leper, Elisha pronounced God’s curse on Gehazi. “Naaman Leprosy will dig to you and your descendants forever.”
- Gehazi left Elisha’s presence with his skin leprosy as white as snow!!
- Very interestingly in (2nd Kings 8:4-6) we find Gehazi in the palace of king Joram son of Ahab hob-knobbing with the king.
- Here Gehazi is again called, “The servant of Elisha” Gehazi is recounting the story of the woman whose son Elisha healed.
- Now this wouldn’t be possible if he still had leprosy (Leviticus 13:45-46).
- The word spoken by Elisha over Gehazi was, “Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and your descendants forever.”
- This was to be an endless curse for what Gehazi did.
- Notice how God was working through Gehazi supernaturally – Just as Gehazi finished telling the story about the woman and her son, the woman appeared – so what happened to Gehazi??
GEHAZI’S CURSE WAS REVERSED.
- The turnaround started with a test (II Kings 7:3-9).
- The Talmud, the Jewish holy book says the four lepers at the gate of Samaria were Gehazi and his three sons (Sotah 47a)
- Gehazi got a retest of his greed and he passed the test but choosing Grace over greed.
The curse was reversed, though the curse was irreversible until change occurred. It took Naaman 7 dips to get healed of his leprosy.
- It took Gehazi 7 years of famine before he got his healing.
- Mercy prevailed over judgement.
- (Yer, sanh 29 b) indicates that Elisha had been too harsh with Gehazi.
THE GREATEST REVERSAL: JESUS CHRIST.
Terrible consequences of sin.
- Adam and Eve sinned – This brought about all the problems of society that we see today.
- Broken homes, addictions
- Crime, hate prejudice.
- Lust, pride, slavery, abuse, racism.
- War , violence and sickness
- Sin caused all the curses of life.
When Moses lifted up the serpent of brass it brought healing to bitten by the snake (Numbers 21:9)
In Jesus Christ sin has been cancelled (II Cor. 5:21) Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law (Gal 3:3).
- We are made free in Christ Jesus (Col. 2:14).
THE CURSE HAS BEEN REVERSED.
- Although satan has tried to lay a curse on us, God has turned it into a blessing, God has turned it into a blessing , God has turned it into a blessing-(Deut. 23:5) you are blessed in Christ Jesus.
- We are now healed to the new Jerusalem , our new home “There will be no more curse (Rev. 22:3)
- All curses will be omitted in the blessed realm –That is your future – our full redemption is almost here!!
CONCLUSION
- In Eternity we will find that it was God’s grace that we were not born wealthy or extremely pretty or handsome or in other “favourable” positions, why those people rarely find Christ. (Like the rich young ruler!!)
- Sometimes what looks like a curse can be a blessing in disguise. (The boy without toes).
- Let us depend on Jesus Christ to set us free from sin, sickness, depression, addiction, broken hearts, generational curses and anything else you need.
- You had deliverance come Now. (John 8:36)
