MARK 11:1-11
INTRODUCTION
Jesus was on the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem. Jesus had been here many times, in fact, He had been in the city of Jerusalem many times. But this time, He descends into Jerusalem for the last time. He will die on the cross and resurrect from the dead on the third day, conquering death, hell and the grave. On this day Christ began the Passion Week. On this Sunday Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecy in Zachariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, o daughter of Zion, shout, o daughter of Jerusalem, Behold thy king cometh unto thee: He is Just, and having salvation, lowly and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt, the foal of an ass” (Zech.9:9) on this Sunday Jesus Christ wept over the city and people of Jerusalem.
Let us learn:-
I. THE PERSON OF THIS KING (Mark 11:1-6)
- This particular Sunday Jesus was moving towards the city of Jerusalem.
- He is moving through two little villages near the top of mount olives.
- He is in Bethphage, which means “House of unripe figs”
- He is moving towards Bethany which means “House of dates”
- Jesus had dear friends at Bethany, Mary, Martha and Lazarus
- Jerusalem this time had a population of about 80,000 people. During the week of the Passover, the population of Jerusalem would increase to about 3 million.
- The people came to Jerusalem with anticipation as they celebrated the Passover Week.
- Jesus chose this moment to reveal Himself to the Nation of Israel
- His personality.
- He sends two of His disciples to a village to get a young donkey colt. He tells them exactly where to find the animal (Eph.1:11, Isa.46:10-11)
- His Power (V.3)
- Say ye that the Lord has need of Him”
- Jesus Christ is Lord of all (Phil.2:9-11)
- “The Lord has need of him” v.3. Does God need anything?
- Our Lord became poor for us to be rich (2 Cor.8:9)
- He owned all things, yet possessed nothing (Matt.8:20)
- He fashioned everything, yet He borrowed a boat!
- He created every drop of water yet He cried “I thirst” (John 19:28)
- He was crucified on a borrowed cross, buried into a borrowed tomb.
- He rides on the clouds (Psalm 104:3) yet He borrowed a donkey.
- This donkey had to be redeemed (Ex.13:13, 34:20)
- The redeeming power of the blood of Jesus makes us useful.
- This donkey had to be released “loose him”- For God to use us we must first be set free (Rom 6:14, John 8:36)
- This donkey had to be ruled (v.2) it had to be broken (Rom.12:1-2)
- 6- The Lord will send the donkey right back.
- Give Him Abram a lost pagan- He will give you Abraham, a man of faith
- Give Him Jacob the trickster- He will give back Israel, a prince of God.
- Give Him Saul of Tarsus, a mean, cruel man- He will give you back a Paul a might Apostle of God.
- Give Him Simon a weak, uneducated man, He will give you Peter a rock for Jesus
Give Him your broken, sin-scarred life, He will give you a New life and a home in Heaven.
II. THE PRESENTATION OF THIS KING (Mark 11:7-10)
- He is a lowly one (Zech.9:9)- Palm branches and not red carpet- a donkey not a horse!
- The people who were there included Bartimaeus, Zacchaeus, Lazarus, Mary and Martha- people healed, delivered and ministered to.
- He is the lofty one- They are singing “Hossana” “Save now” (Psalm 118:25-26)
- The Pharisees are upset (Luke 19:39-41)
III. THE PURPOSE OF THE KING (Mark 11:11)
- To examine the town (Luke 19:41-44)
- He saw the future- Jerusalem will be destroyed in 40 years’ time.
- 30,000, Jews would be crucified, the city would be under a siege for months.
- That the Roman General Titus would overrun the city demolishing it.
- He knew that the people of Jerusalem would be scattered to the four winds of the earth.
- “JESUS WEPT”- He knew they were waiting for judgement (Isa.53:3)
- What does Jesus see in your future?
- To Examine the Temple.
- Jesus visited the temple, He saw all the things.
- Jesus saw busy priests carrying out their rituals,
- Jesus saw that they were not interested in Him, so He left.
- What does the Lord see in this our church?
CONCLUSION:
- They rejected Him, their king, they crucified Him.
- The Lord is here today to redeem, receive, restore, refresh, reward and revive.
- Will you receive your King today?
