SERIES: OUR GOD FATHERS
TEXT: GALATIANS 3:6-7; GENESIS 12:1-4, 15:5, 18:10-14, 21:1-3.
We always hear their names thrown around in prayers. The GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The GOD of Elijah, Job, Daniel, David, Moses, etc. The Italians have a saying, “The world is so hard a man must have two fathers to look after him and that is why we have godfathers.” While we may have our family fathers around us, God has given us godfathers. In the scriptures we have read today God is referred to as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. These three men are father, son and grandson, they are singled out as godfathers. God made a covenant with these three men.
In Gal. 3:6-7- “Just as Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteous, so then understand that those who believe are the sons of Abraham. “ Father Abraham had many sons and I am one of them….” is a song sung in the 70s-80s.
We must understand the powerful nature of the promises given to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, are ultimately to us since these men are our godfathers in faith. Let us examine the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and by extension we will look at other men that God is particularly associated, they are fathers of our faith in Jesus Christ. They all godfathers culminate to our one and only on Lord and Saviour JESUS CHRIST.
God spoke to Abraham when he was 75years old and declared that he will become a father of a great nation. Eleven years later, in Gen. 16 the promise was not yet fulfilled so Sarai sends Hagar her handmaid to Abraham and she gets pregnant with Ishmael (God hears), Hagar (God sees). Finally God repeats the promise to Abraham when Abraham was 99 years old, then when Abraham was 100 years old. Sarah gave birth to Isaac!!
When you review the story of Abraham, the father of our faith, the father of the faithful you can summarise his life by saying God is not only a promise maker, but He is also a promise keeper.
It is important for you and we know this is about the God of Abraham, “A promise made is a promise kept.”
God is not a man that He should lie, let years pass, let situations change, let the heart be filled with laughter and doubt, scoff at it, shake your head, think there is no way, take things into your hands, make mistakes in life at the end of the day just know that if it is decreed by God, then it will come to pass. Hallelujah.
God told Jeremiah in Jer. 1:12- “The Lord said to me, you have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
God is watching over and guarding His word. He is sleepless over His word. If words come out of His mouth, then they will be fulfilled by His hands!!
“The Lord always keeps His promises, He is gracious in all He does”- Psalm 145:13.
“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and shall succeed in the thing for which I set it”- Isa. 55:11.
Our challenge is the same as our godfather faced. We begin to make assumptions about God’s promises!! We make assumption about, the when, the where, the how and with whom the promise will be fulfilled.
The enemy works in the arena of assumptions. 2nd Cor. 10:5- we demolish every vain imagination.
- An imagination is an assumption, something I am imaging that is influenced by someone other than God.
- These assumptions lead to ungodly and unrealistic expectations. So we end up treating our assumptions as if it was part of the promise.
- Abraham and Sarah assumed that Ishmael was the promised son while he was the son of a slave woman.
- Don’t add assumptions to God’s promises to you.
- That is why the positive thinkers, “The call it”, the name it and the claim it, blabber it, get frustrated, angry when they still don’t see the change.
- That is why pastors, apostles and prophets of our day are cheating their church members of their property, land, houses and money.
- We must cling to His word, exactly what He said!!
- Like Abraham, we attach our assumptions to what God said and we get ourselves in trouble.
- Please let us learn from our godfather Abraham. Take God at His word!! Let us learn:-
PROMISES HAVE THEIR PACE
- As for Abraham, the promise as given when Abraham was 75 years and it was fulfilled when Abraham was 100 years old.
- 25 years of waiting, wondering, worry, the promises of God are fulfilled not on our schedule and timetable.
- God’s promises have their pace. Don’t get ahead of God. Those that wait on Him shall be renewed- Isa. 40:28-30.
- You cannot force God to do today that which He has planned to do tomorrow.
- Do not let the pace of your promise paralyse you.
- In these days of instant coffee, oatmeal, express-way, by-passes, remember God’s promises have a pace.
- No one wants a slow God!! Jehovah is not slow, He works on time, yet He is not limited by space and time-He is eternal.
- What promise has God made to you? Have you grown weary in waiting? Are you inviting Hagar into your life in an attempt to hurry God?
- Slow down to the pace of the promise. His promise is worth waiting on!! Hallelujah.
PROMISES HAVE PROBLEMS
- We will experience problems as we wait.
- This is because we made assumptions about how God will work and when He will work, we assume challenges are not part of the promise.
- Assumption will make you to question the promises of God.
- As for father Abraham the challenge was “Time,” God you promised me when I was 75 now I am 100 years. Soon I will die. God am I tied or I did not hear you right?
- You can’t handle a promise unless you can handle the opposition that comes with obedience we can’t be used by God.
- Please understand that dreams are usually accompanied by seasons that feel like nightmares.
- You would manage the mess that shows up prior to the miracle.
- The only way to survive those problems, seasons and make it to the promise is to keep your eyes on the promise keeper rather than focusing on the promise. Keep your eyes on JESUS CHRIST- Heb. 12:1-4.
- The promise is on the other side of the problem and challenge.
- Abraham had to go to places he had never gone before to get to the promise. You’ll have to go through uncharted, uncomfortable seasons. Just because you are facing challenges, inconveniences, nerve wrecking moments, don’t miss the promise.
- Don’t let problems prompt you that you are on the right path!!
- When you here people say they believe in the God of Abraham, they are declaring that God is a promise maker and a promise keeper.
- I want to pray for those who need a promise, those who feel like the promise is delayed, those promised but are living in a season of problems and challenges.
THE GOD OF ABRAHAM IS A PROVIDER
- We need to know this today, when you say that the God of Abraham is your God, you are then making a declaration that God is Jehovah Jireh, the provider.
- That is why David declared in Psalm 37:25- “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous FORSAKEN or their children begging bread.”
- That is why Paul could tell the church in Philippi, “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Jesus Christ- Phil. 4:19.
- If you are serving the God of Abraham, you need to know you are serving a God who sees our need and meets our needs.
- God’s own Son told us about the God of Abraham. Matt. 6:25-26- “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body what you will wear. Is not life more than food and body, more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or gather into barns- and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
- You and I need to know two things about God’s provision. The God of Abraham:-
- Supply was as a result of sacrifice.
- Abraham had live a life of sacrificial obedience.
- Abraham had left his country, his family, tradition, familiarity, religion, culture and travel to a place that God would show him.
- Abraham sacrificed his son of promise.
- Some of us want a miracle but we are not ready to sacrifice. Now we don’t earn a provision but we position ourselves for provision.
- God is a provider through principles first- Gen. 17:8-9.
- Your responsibility is to Obey the terms of the covenant, you and all your descendants have this continual responsibility.
- God was telling Abraham, “I will if you will.” I will provide if you will operate on the principle of obedience.
- Abraham positioned himself for a miracle by taking care of the principles that were established by God first.
- Miracles happen based on principles God has put in place.
- Principles like treating our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- Principles like tithing, forgiving others, preferring other people over ourselves.
- We must love and live by the Principles of the provider.
- Love the provider more than the provision.
- Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who only wanted you when they needed something? We must desire His face more than we desire His hand.
CONCLUSION
- You serve the God of Abraham- He is a promise maker and a promise keeper.
- Do you need a promise? Are you tired of waiting for the promise? Are you being challenged in your promise? Are you delayed? Rise up.
- Do you know you serve a God who provides, He knows your every need- you have need today? Rise up.
- Do you know the God of Abraham? Do you want to know the God of Abraham personally?- please stand up.
