SERIES: REVIVAL TIME
TEXT: 2 CHRONICLES 7:13-14
When revival happen every area of life is revived. The soul, spirit, body, family, marriage, economy etc. The hearts of fathers are turned to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers.
Revival history (Edwin Orr) shows again and again that there are two master keys to obtaining true revival. These two master keys are DEEP REPENTANCE and AGONIZING PRAYER.
Frank Bartleman a leader in the Azusa street revival wrote “I received from God early in 1905 the following keynote to revival; “The depth of revival will be determined exactly by the depth of the spirit of repentance.” This is a principle in revival. The other thing Bartleman emphasized is hours of agonizing travail and intersession they went through before revival hit Azusa street.
Charles Finney (WHY REVIVAL TARRY’S) was convinced that if the church met these two conditions for revival; deep repentance and heartfelt, organizing prayer, then revival would always result.
Revival is not a miracle rather intentional on the part of man. Revival comes from heaven when heroic souls enter the conflict determined to win or die or if need be, to win and die!!-2nd Chronicles 7:14. Let us learn:-
AGONIZING PRAYER.
- Famous quotations.
Matthew Henry. “When God intends great mercy for His people, the first thing He does is set them a-praying.”
- The day of Pentecost (Acts 2) would not have happened had they not prayed.
Leonard Ravenhill wrote, “the man who can get believers to praying would under God usher in the greatest revival that the world has never known.”
T. Pierson wrote, “from the day of Pentecost there has been NOT ONE great awakening in any land which has not begun in a UNION of prayer, through only among two or three”- Acts 4:31.
- Ezekiel 37:7- “so I prophesied as I was commanded and as I prophesied, there was a noise and behold a shaking and the bones came together, bone to his bone.”
- It does not have to be a multitude to bring a shaking.
John Wesley said, “have you any days of fasting and prayer? Storm the throne of grace and persevere therein, and mercy will come down.
- AGONIZING PRAYER
- Pleads with God that He might glorify Himself.
- Pleads that His spirit might be poured out.
- WHAT CONSTITUTES A SPIRIT OF PRAYER?
- Prayer is the state of the heart.
- The spirit of prayer is a state of continual desire and anxiety of mind for the salvation of sinners.
- A Christian who has this spirit of prayer feels anxious for souls.
- 32:24- “and there wrestled a man with Him.”
- Wrestled means to grapple or wrestle to float away like dust.
- It means “to raise dust” by wrestling. The man and Jacob in their wrestling raised dust. Agonizing prayer may leave you dusty and with a limp.
DEEP REPENTANCE- Hosea 10:12
“Sow yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy, break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord till He come and rain righteousness upon you.”
- There are three things to do in seeking God:-
- “Sow yourself into righteousness”- This means to stop sinning. (STOP SINNING).
- This means stop sinning and start doing what is right in all things.
- Consecrate to do that which is good and right.
- Sowing and reaping go together as labor and reward.
- Stop sinning- sin of commission and sins of omission.
- “Reap in mercy”- this means to accept and appreciate the mercy of God extended to us.
- Accept God’s mercy- unless you accept God’s mercy, it will not be yours.
- Both sowing in righteousness and reaping in mercy are our responsibility.
- Righteousness is here to do, mercy is here to receive.
- Do what is right and accept the mercy provided.
- “Breakup with your fallow ground.”
- This is also the work of man. Each one must break his/her own life.
- Fallow ground is that which has been plowed but not sown, ground not in use, idle land, crusted over or hardened until it needs to be broken up again to receive the seed.
- Our hearts and wills must be broken and yielded to God.
- We must make ourselves wiling to receive the word of God and to obey it or seeking Him will not avail us anything.
- Fallow ground is ground which has once been tilled but which now lies waste. It need to be broken up and mellowed before it is suited to receive grain.
- What is to break up the fallow ground?
- To break up the fallow ground is to break up your hearts to prepare your mind to bring forth fruit unto God.
- How is the fallow ground to be broken up?
- Reposition yourself to the things of God.
- Direct your attention to the things of God-Prov. 23:7.
- Look at your heart, examine and note the state of your mind and see where you are.
- You must set yourself to work to consider your sins.
- Self-examination consists in looking at your live in considering your actions.
- Call up the past and learn of its true character.
- Look back to your past history.
- Take a paper and a pen go over your sins.
- Confess them to God, repent of them one by one. Write across your list “FORGIVEN” according to 1st John 1:9.
Again in 2nd Chronicles 7:14
- To turn from our wicked ways repentance and seeking deliverance from our ways.
- Lay aside Hebrews 12:1, “Let us lay aside every weight and the sin that doth so easily beset us and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
- Weight is whatever is prominent, protuberance, bulk, mass, burden or encumbrance.
- Weights are not necessarily sins, but anything that hinders movement.
- For fire to fall and consume the sacrifice, it must be innocent and without blemish, but most of all it must be on the alter to stay.
- The problem with “living sacrifices” is that they can walk away from the alter!!
CONCLUSION-2nd Chronicles 7:14
- If you do four things:-
- Humble themselves.
- Pray
- Seek my face.
- Turn from their wicked ways.
- God will do three things:-
- He will hear from heaven.
- He will forgive our sins.
- He will heal our land.
- There will be personal, family, church, national, universal revival.
