THOU, MY EVERLASTING PORTION

LAMENTATIONS 3:22-26

INTRODUCTION

Jeremiah saw the Lord as being his “Everlasting portion” far more valuable than all the lands of Earth! To the Jews, the term “portion” meant the part of the land of Canaan assigned to them. But now in Babylonian captivity, the land was not theirs to enjoy and from which to reap benefit. Jeremiah saw the Lord as being his “Everlasting portion” far more valuable than all the lands of the earth. David said, “The Lord is the portion of my inheritance” (Psalm 16:5) “My flesh and my heart fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26). You may never get a portion of land from your father, but be assured if you truly love the Lord God is your everlasting portion. He is more than life to you.

Let us meditate on:-

I.  THE LORD IS OUR EVER- PRESENT PORTION

  • The Jews being in captivity were separated from their “Everlasting earthly portion”, the land of Israel.
  • But as the people of God, they were never really separated from Him.
  • Moses said to Joshua, “And the Lord, He is the one who goes before you, He will be with you, do not fear nor be dismayed” (Deut.31:8)
  • He said to us believers “Lo, I am with you always” (Matt.28:20)

II.      THE LORD IS OUR ALL- SUFFICIENT PORTION (2 Cor. 9:8)

  • “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed”
  • Paul realizing this truth he was caused to write: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13)

III.   THE LORD IS OUR UNMIXED PORTION

  • An earthly portion will always be mixed, bring both roses and thorns, crops and weeds, good soil and rocks (Psalm 31:19)
  • Every attribute and characteristic of God is defined as absolute perfection.
  • Holy, Holy, Holy, “ Only thou art holy, there is none besides thee, perfect in power, in love and purity”

IV.   THE LORD IS OUR INCOMPRENSIBLE PORTION

  • Earthly portions can be measured by acres, meters and bounds.
  • But we cannot measure, describe or discover the depths of God, we cannot measure Him. His love is so high, wide, low that we can’t comprehend (Job 11-9)

V. THE LORD IS OUR EVERLASTING PORTION

  • Our earthly portion at best is ours only for a few short years but God is our portion forever (Isa.9:6)
  • Let us hope in Him who is our eternal life (II Pet.1:1)
  • J. Crosby in her hymn “Close to thee”
  • “Thou my everlasting portion, More than friend or life to me, All along my pilgrim journey, saviour, let me walk with thee. Close to thee, close to thee, close to thee, close to thee, All along my pilgrim journey Savior, let me walk with thee.

CONCLUSION

  • His compassions they fail not.
  • His mercies they fail not.
  • Great is His faithfulness.
  • “All along my pilgrim journey, savior, let me walk with thee” Amen.
